9 Things To Munch To Avoid Bad Breath

By Minq Team
Julia Kuzenkova

Bad breath could ruin your night. Got a date in a few minutes and just caught a whiff of your stinky breath? Pop in one of these natural breath deodorizers!

Yogurt

If you have bad breath, eating a small cup of unsweetened yogurt can be your saving grace. Yogurt contains probiotics, which are small organisms that will compete with the odor causing bacteria in your mouth that produce hydrogen sulfide. The less hydrogen sulfide your mouth contains, the less your breath will stink.

Tea

A perfect way to eliminate bad breath is to drink a cup of unsweetened tea, especially green tea. Tea contains high levels of an antioxidant called polyphenol, which is a wonderful compound that prevents the growth of bacteria. Polyphenol has the added benefit of breaking down sulfur compounds, so always try to drink a cup of tea after meals.

Apples

Apples are another fantastic way to prevent bad breath. Apples are one of those foods that make your mouth water, which is great if you are suffering from bad breath. Bad breath causing bacteria thrive in drier mouths, so eating apples that promote saliva production will help keep your mouth rinsed and clean.

Spearmint

This one is fairly obvious, but give it a try anyways. Chewing on a spearmint leaf will almost certainly eliminate bad breath by completely overpowering any other smell. Spearmint also has the added benefit of aiding digestion, so is a great after meal treat.

Spinach

Spinach is perfect if you are planning on eating a lot of garlic. Spinach is another food that contains polyphenols, which break down the sulfur compounds in garlic. Spinach and garlic also compliment one another, so it is a natural food to eat when consuming garlic.

Strawberries

Strawberries, and other citrus rich foods, are a serious threat to bad breath. Not only does the vitamin C found in strawberries create a dangerous environment for bacteria, it also combats gingivitis and gum disease. Gingivitis and gum disease are the leading causes of halitosis, so be sure you are eating plenty of foods rich in vitamin C.

Parsley

Parsley is another herb that contains polyphenols. Remember, polyphenol is the compound that fights sulfur in garlic, so eat it when consuming lots of garlic. Just make sure to eat the parsley during the same sitting as the garlic, or it won’t help.

Sugarless Gum

This one should be fairly obvious. Like spearmint, sugarless gums offer a means to cover the smell of bad breath. Always use sugarless gun, though, because sugar is miracle grow for odor causing bacteria.

Water

Water is the easiest, and one of the most effective ways to fight off bad breath. If your mouth is dry, it is going to have more bacteria, so keep yourself hydrated with a glass of water. Water also rinses food particles away.
