Up and coming pop-star, Lizzo, has really made a name for herself in this past year. With her hit single “Truth Hurts” making it to No.1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, Lizzo is the female singer/rapper who’s on everyone’s mind. While basing her platform on self-love and confidence, she is an advocate for women and girls of all ages, and is one of the best icons to follow. Following a long childhood filled with self-hatred and struggles with understanding herself, she rose above her problems and came out on top.
Use this Lizzo-inspired guide to learn to love yourself in every way and become THAT woman.
1. Accept Yourself
The first step to self-love: acceptance. Learning to accept who you are is the hardest part of learning to love yourself in a media-dependent world. In an interview with Elle Magazine, Lizzo stated,”I take self-love very seriously. And I take it seriously because when I was younger, I wanted to change everything about myself.” She said, “I didn’t love who I was. And the reason I didn’t love who I was is because I was told I wasn’t lovable by the media, by [people at] school, by not seeing myself in beauty ads, by not seeing myself in television…by lack of representation.”
The world and people around you do not have the ability to tell you what you should and shouldn’t believe about yourself. Money is not always the key to happiness and you can find joy within the small aspects of life. Accept who you are as a person and continue to work on doing that every day.
2. Own Up To Your Vulnerabilities
Realizing what you are most afraid of and then doing it can be the most powerful action you do. Whether you focus on speaking kindly about your body every day or simply just learning to express your feelings and emotions healthily. As Lizzo says in her song Good As Hell, “Boss up and change your life. You can have it all, no sacrifice.” Live vicariously through her words and be that person you’ve always dreamed of.
3. Self Care
Take some time for your inner self. Life can be challenging and cause a lot of unneeded stress on ourselves. Lizzo stated in a piece for NBC News “Self-care is really rooted in self-preservation, just like self-love is rooted in honesty. We have to start being more honest with what we need, and what we deserve, and start serving that to ourselves.”
Acquire the knowledge for yourself on how to relax and take some much-needed space from your thoughts. Treat yourself to a spa day or vent to someone over a glass of wine. Relax and get your mind back on track!
4. Create Your Own Mental Toolbox
Realize what helps you on your bad days and compartmentalize those things. Keep in mind that everybody has different ways of communicating and helping oneself. Just because it works for someone else, doesn’t mean it will always work for you.
Lizzo stated in the NBC News piece, “I’ve been working on self-care and self-love for so long, that I feel like, with this album, ‘Cuz I Love You,’ I am starting to really answer those questions for myself.”
Lizzo used her own mental toolbox of singing and song writing to help her on her bad days. She encourages you to find the things in life that give you inner peace and happiness and do a lot of it.
5. Remember That Big Changes Don’t Happen Overnight
Give yourself time to adjust while learning to love yourself. Change will happen but learning how to deal with the hard times is also important. Track your changes and admire the progress you make, and while you’re at it, listen to Lizzo’s album, “Cuz I Love You,” to feel like the amazing person you are.
