A young woman named Hannah Pewee was recently kicked out of the Woodland Mall, in Michigan. Why? Because she was wearing a Finding Nemo shirt that said ‘Just Keep Swimming,’ blue shorts, and white flats. Apparently, to the mall and its rule makers, her outfit choice was inappropriate and scandalous. But Hannah would not be beaten down, so she went to Facebook.
Hannah’s Facebook Post Called Attention To A Real Issue
In the Facebook post, Hannah explains she wore what she wore, and it’s not because she wanted to purposefully show skin. She mentions how it was extremely hot out, since, you know, it’s summer time now: “Never mind that within a one-foot radius there were plenty of girls dressed just like me, since it’s NINETY degrees outside. I am so angry right now, I’m shaking. I felt so embarrassed I almost cried. All because a stranger didn’t like how I dressed.”
But Hannah didn’t need any excuses, and knew it. She ended the post with how this type of situation is getting out of hand. “Shaming how girls are dressed is deplorable and outdated, and it needs to stop.”
Hannah’s Post Got The Support It Deserved
Her post went viral. It has been shared over 9,000 times and has over 16,000 reactions. Most of the reactions are in support of her outfit/anger towards the mall security that forced her to leave. Many of those who commented are saying how ridiculous it is that this happened to this young woman and how there are worse outfits to wear to the mall.
Then, Finally, The Mall Responded
According to Glamour, the Facebook page for Woodland Mall apparently responded to others bringing attention to the post and the issues they had, apologized and let them know that they are going to fix the policies, “We’re going to make sure that all of our team members are trained on our dress code policy and procedures so that everyone can enjoy our Mall. In the future, if there are complaints about another shoppers wardrobe, our team will be able to easily and clearly make a good decision.”
Hannah also posted an update a day after her original post, confirming they had given her a call and “apologized for what happened yesterday.”
A Reminder That Life Is Full Of Diversity For A Reason
Hannah’s story is a reminder that shaming is an outrageous problem in our society and people need to calm down. Most importantly, she has successfully used her story to make an impact in our society with a clear message: If someone is keeping to themselves but is dressed in a way that maybe you of all people, feel uncomfortable, then get yourself out of the situation or get over it. The world is not a perfectly sheltered place and humans are not robots. Life is full of diversity for a reason. We hope, for her and everyone’s sake, that the company and the rest of the world, listens carefully.
