When expecting their first child, couples have to have lots of serious discussions. What will their parenting style be? Do they want to raise the child to be religious? How will they work together to keep up with childcare? One big question that many soon-to-be parents struggle with is: What will they name their baby? Both parents want to find the perfect fit for their bundle of joy! But, what if one parent is sold on a name that the other simply cannot tolerate? One woman is facing this dilemma in epic proportions. She took to Reddit to explain her situation.
Their disagreement is not a run-of-the-mill inability to compromise. Her husband is insisting on naming their firstborn after one of his ex-girlfriends. It's not just any old ex, though. According to the 23-year-old mother-to-be, it's "the one that got away." She said that even once she started dating her now-husband, the ex-girlfriend in question still created issues for them. He always loved her and wants a reminder of her by naming his daughter after her.
Don't worry though! He did say that his wife can name their second baby. For now, he's blaming "hormones" for his wife's reaction to the proposed name. Her reaction? She's considering a divorce! She asked Reddit whether she was overreacting or if they agreed that her husband still loves his ex and they were more than willing to share their opinions.
All in all, it seemed that most Reddit users agreed that it is seriously odd to insist on naming your daughter after your ex. One user pointed out that this may not a standalone issue but signs of much deeper problems in their relationship. Others encouraged divorce or marital counseling.
Interestingly, a number of comments came from people who were named after one of their parent's exes. One of whom shared the future problems her name caused. She said her dad told her mom the name was based on a popular song. It wasn't until later that her grandmother revealed it was actually the name of his childhood sweetheart. Now, she is resentful of her dad and his disrespect of her mother! She warned the woman who posted not to allow her husband to get his way.
What do you think? Is it normal for someone to want to name their kid after an ex? Is this husband totally disrespectful? Should this woman be considering divorce? Let us know in the comments!
