An eleven-year-old girl was told her outfit violated dress code policies, and the school isn't handling the situation correctly.
Dress codes around the world may vary, but sometimes they are a little uncalled for.
Over the last few months of 2017, we’ve seen seen a lot of ridiculous dress code violations: The high schooler who called out dress codes in her yearbook, the girl who got in trouble for wearing a crew-neck shirt, and the high school boys who retaliated against their school’s harsh rules, towards girls.
But now, we focus on an eleven-year-old girl who got in trouble for showing her shoulders on her school picture day.
A girl named Vegas had her school picture day, in the state of Montana, and her school did not approve of her outfit choice.
Vegas’s grandmother, Sandra, posted to social media about what happened.
“My beautiful granddaughter Vegas got dress coded today, her sister bought her this dress and they told her to change it because it was distracting.”
School picture day is a day that many kids look forward to. They want to show off their hairstyle or cute new outfit, just as Vegas wanted to do.
Vegas is visibly upset in the photo due to the school treating her in an undeserving manner.
The outfit in question:
Sleeveless, high-neckline, heather grey dress with pink flowers. Leggings underneath the dress. Dress right above the knees.
The school’s issue:
The school said that her outfit was an issue because it showed her “distracting” shoulders.
Vegas’s grandmother, Sandra, mentioned to Yahoo that Vegas is very shy and keeps to herself.
“She does not think that boys even look at her! If boys are looking at the shoulders and saying sexy things to a little girl, they need the attention, not Vegas.”
In the end, the school did allow Vegas to take her photo in her outfit but called her parents to bring her a change of clothes to change into afterward.
While some may think that it was ‘generous’ of the school to permit Vegas to take her photo in the dress, the school isn’t doing ANYTHING about the situation that they started!
Why aren’t they doing anything? Well, according to Sandra, the school thinks ‘the case is closed, she changed her clothes’.
When it came to Sandra talking to her granddaughter she had this to say:
“I had to talk to her — she was crying. I am mad at the school for body shaming her. Vegas said that she does not want to talk about it because it still upsets her.”
Alright…let’s think this through.
Why would someone be distracted by an 11-year-old girl’s shoulders? That is beyond inappropriate and insane! I mean…can you imagine dealing with this, at that young of an age? This poor girl!
My 11-year-old-self was extremely self-conscious and cared way too much as to how people treated me. This is an impressionable age for this girl! Embarrassing her on an important day, like school picture day, is cruel.
And when it comes to the fact that the school is ‘closing the case’… that is the most pathetic excuse I have heard of in a while. ‘Sweeping it under the rug’ is such a cowardly thing for any school to do.
Maybe this school should rethink their policies. Or better yet, maybe they could attempt to change their behavior and handle situations like this in a more professional manner.
