Tipping culture can be a tense subject, with many diners having different opinions on what amounts are acceptable. One man angered his girlfriend for refusing to tip a waitress. However, he believes his actions are justified based on what transpired at the eatery.
The man shared his story on Reddit and asked if he was in the wrong in the situation. He explains that he went to a local diner alone for pancakes and coffee, and his waitress “seemed nice enough.” They claim that everything was fine until they went to use the bathroom. As they walked back to their table, the poster claimed they overheard the waitress talking about them. She allegedly said, “See that guy over there? Total weirdo vibes. Keeps looking around all nervous and ****. Probably lives in his mom’s basement.”
The poster admits they have social anxiety, and they likely do look around more than usual. He says that the waitress was “all smiles” when they returned to the table, but he paid the exact amount and left without a tip.
The Girlfriend Insisted He Should Have Tipped Regardless
When the man retold the story to his girlfriend, she was allegedly unhappy he didn’t tip despite her behavior. He claims she said, “That’s her job and she probably makes like $3 an hour.” Regardless, the poster says the waitress’s behavior was uncalled for. He wonder if he should have brought it up at the restaurant, but felt walking out without tipping was the only way they could respond. They ask, “Should I have sucked it up and tipped anyway, or was walking out justified?”
Despite what a sensitive subject tipping can be, the post garnered over 2500 responses, with most in the poster’s favor. One commenter replied, “It’s called karma. She had the need to spew some negative energy into this world and she got some back.”
Several others suggest the poster should have left a message on the tip line. Some say they should have left a snarky comment, but one offers a more tactful message. “What you identified as weirdo energy is social anxiety. What you said made me feel terrible,” they suggested.
Another says they were justified in leaving without tipping, but probably should have explained why, even if it was just a note.
