Once Upon A Urology Office

Once upon a time, “Hillary” worked at a urology clinic, according to a story she posted on Reddit. At the time, Hillary was the chief scheduler there, working with patients and their insurance companies to approve their urology procedures. Hillary’s office had only recently opened up and as it was a brand-new facility, they were completing all their surgeries in the hospital OR.
Urologists perform many different procedures, but the one that many people often spend a lot of time debating is a vasectomy. It can be a contentious decision for many families, but it’s usually made with the express permission of husband and wife. Many couples will come in for a visit with the doctor to talk about the surgery and decide their reproductive futures. Some will choose to freeze specimens in case they decide to have children later in life. Whatever the decision, it’s the couple and the couple alone who have the right to make that decision, but one interfering mother just couldn’t let her darling son make his own choices.
An Intimate Office Visit

It was just a regular day at the office when a couple came in. They were friends-of-friends of Hillary’s, “Nancy” and “Harry.” Nancy and Harry were quite young and obviously in love, but they didn’t want kids. Hillary scheduled the vasectomy surgery for two weeks out and she and the doctor told the happy couple what they could expect from the procedure.
Nancy told Hillary that, “she didn’t want kids because of her health,” and Hillary nodded and told her, “I totally get it.” Hillary could sense that Nancy felt like she should be ashamed or guilty about this, so she tried to put her at ease. She went on to say that their reasons and resulting actions are theirs alone and they shouldn’t be concerned with what others think.
After the couple left the office, it was clear that they felt much better and happy about their decision to move forward. Hillary went home at the end of the day feeling satisfied that she and her colleagues had helped Nancy and Harry make the right decision for their family. Little did she know that an interfering force was already brewing.
A Strange Phone Call

The next morning, Hillary checked her work messages. There was a message from a woman claiming to be Nancy, but it certainly didn’t sound like the sparkling woman she’d spoken to yesterday. The call was also from a completely different number and area code than the one the office had on file for Nancy.
The strangest thing, though, was that the mystery caller had the correct date of birth for Nancy and other personal information that a total stranger wouldn’t know. After listening to the message, Hillary called the number back and politely asked, “How can I help, ma’am?” The unnamed women claimed she needed to cancel Harry’s vasectomy. Hillary responded, “Of course. Can you just read me off X from your insurance card?” She asked because it wouldn’t be information that was widely available, only the insurance holders would know that information for sure.
The woman responded angrily, “Well, why do you need that?”
Hillary said, “Oh, it’s just standard procedure, ma’am. After all, I have to let your insurance company know that you’re canceling the surgery.” But Hillary knew something was up.
The exasperated woman let out a sigh, “…I’ll have to call you back, I don’t have my insurance card on me.”
Hillary quickly responded, “Yes, ma’am, I’ll talk to you later.” But she knew something was very fishy. She immediately called the number listed for Harry, who answered right away.
He said hello, Hillary told him what happened, and he barked out a loud laugh, which wasn’t quite what Hillary was expecting.
Motherly Impersonation

Hillary began, “Hello sir, this is Hillary from the urology clinic, I just had a voicemail this morning from someone who claimed to be your wife who tried to cancel your…”
But Harry cut her off. He held the phone away from the receiver and shouted out, “Darn it, Nancy, you win! Make the dinner reservations and I’ll handle my idiot mother!”
He then put his phone back to his ear and explained to Hillary, “I’m sorry, the woman who called you was my mother, ‘Janice.’ My wife already got a call from the hospital saying that we’d canceled the surgery. We don’t want to cancel the procedure, and now I have to take Nancy to dinner at a fancy restaurant because I was wrong about Janice.” He sounded defeated and annoyed at his mother’s subterfuge. It was clear that his mother just couldn’t, or wouldn’t, stop meddling in decisions best left to the couple. Hillary, however, knew just how to deal with her.
Everything Will Be Alright

It was clear that Janice was extremely thorough, attempting to cancel the vasectomy through both the hospital and the urology office, but there was little chance that Nancy and Harry wouldn’t have seen through her ploy. While Harry was slightly annoyed by his mother’s meddling, he seemed assured that he could take of the situation. After Hillary was done speaking with them on the phone, Nancy and Harry both felt confident that together, they and the urology office could deal with Janice.
Hillary password protected their medical account at the urology clinic and explained the complex situation to the urologist and her office manager. Hopefully, she thought, that would be the last of it.
It would not be the last of it.
A Mysterious Phone Call

Several days passed without incident and Hillary put the issue to rest in her mind. It was a busy day at the clinic, so Hillary was helping out the receptionist and picked up the office phone. The woman on the phone sounded familiar but Hillary couldn’t quite place her. This lady wanted to be seen immediately for what was an extremely minor urology problem.
Hillary explained that the office was extremely busy right now and there were no available new patient appointments for at least a month. She suggested that the patient contact her primary care physician, who could most likely help her with her issue.
Unfortunately, that didn’t satisfy the mystery woman. She was extremely upset and yelled at Hillary that she was a very important person who knew the CEO of the hospital personally. She insisted that Hillary make her an appointment or else and that she was only available at this very specific day and time–on a Tuesday in June.
Hillary wasn’t having it, though. She explained that the surgeon isn’t in the office on Tuesdays, so he can’t see any patients, but Hillary could book her for August on a Wednesday. The lady shouted back that she, “knew good and darn well,” that the doctor was now available because it was her son who had his surgery scheduled for that time, and that procedure had been canceled. So, by her logic, the surgeon should be available to see her.
Of course, that’s not how operating rooms function. The surgeon isn’t simply going to be at the office even if a surgery was moved, because the next patient will just go into the OR first. Hillary tried explaining all of that, but the woman refused to listen and just wanted to speak to her manager.
Now Hillary now knew this was obviously Janice, so she handed it off to the office manager and hoped she could resolve it. After failing to convince Janice, the office then called the OR at the hospital and the Medical Records department to ensure that Janice’s meddling couldn’t further interfere with Harry’s vasectomy.
But, of course, that wasn’t the end of Janice’s attempts to ruin her son’s surgery.
The Walk-In Monster

A week later, which was still a week before the scheduled vasectomy, a walk-in patient arrived at the urology office, which was fairly unusual since Hillary’s clinic didn’t accept walk-ins. Her “issue” wasn’t even urology-related, but she DEMANDED to see the doctor immediately without an appointment. The woman wouldn’t leave despite the receptionist’s attempts to give her directions to a walk-in primary care clinic that would be more than happy to deal with her problem. After diplomatic efforts failed, the receptionist went to get Hillary to help out with this clearly deranged woman.
As soon as Hillary said one word, the woman instantly recognized her voice. She immediately began screaming that Hillary was the one who was trying to “keep her from having any grandbabies!” That’s when Hillary realized that she was in the presence of the infamous Janice.
Because of everything she’d been through with Janice, Hillary did not want to deal with her personally. She called security and had her removed from the premises.
You might think that would be it, right?
Of course not.
A Disturbing Delivery

The next week, Harry got his vasectomy and everything went as planned. After he healed, he and Nancy came back to the office for a check-up and he was deemed good to go–free of swimmers. The couple wouldn’t have children and didn’t have to worry about anything happening that could sabotage that, like Janice. Nancy and Hillary even became friends and hung out several times afterward, and everything seemed well.
Several weeks later, a florist delivered a bouquet to the office addressed to the surgeon. The flowers had a traditional, “congratulations on your baby” theme. Hillary opened them for him and found a note that was truly frightening:
“I hope one day you hurt as much as you have hurt me. I hope one day your heart breaks as much as you’ve broken mine. You have KILLED my dreams.”
It was, of course, unsigned, but they obviously knew this “gift” was from Janice.
Well, this time, the office manager wasn’t letting it go. They called the police, got lawyers involved, the whole shebang. No one wanted Janice anywhere where she could possibly harm the surgeon or staff. Both the hospital and university campus banned her from premises, and eventually, Janice just disappeared.
Eating Her Just Desserts

Hillary found out Janice’s claim that she was a hospital VIP was totally bunk. Janice had worked as a part-time volunteer in the 1990s. While Harry was friends with the CEO of the hospital, he certainly wasn’t going to try to prevent his friend from getting a procedure.
No one knew what happened to Harry and Nancy, but hopefully, they’re living a happy childless life, without toxic interference from Janice. And as for Janice, she may not have grandbabies, but she might just be eating her just desserts.
