The weirdest and most impractical trends in makeup and fashion that need to be stopped!
Rainbow/Unicorn Hair
If this crazy hair trend doesn’t define the chaos that 2017 has been to you, then where have you been all year?
Rainbow/Unicorn/Holographic hair (whatever you call it) needs to stop before it’s too late. I will never be able to pull this off and I will never attempt it. I mean I guess I could see people doing this for Halloween, so that would be fine, but other than that, let’s not.
The RompHIM
Back in May, we brought the attention to the male fashion craze of the RompHim. Yes, this is a thing that happened (if you don’t remember).
The perfect addition to your ‘frat star starter pack’ has been a controversial outfit choice. Okay, maybe I’m just not the biggest fan of it because I don’t like rompers in general. But this was definitely a trend that threw a huge curveball in the fashion world.
Mircrobladed Eyebrows
Okay, so we’ve reported on this trend a while back and after the horror story of that woman in Australia (with the botched brow-job) I’m going to have to say pass forever. Basically, the Aussie woman went to an unhygienic microblade technician, and because of the unclean work and environment, her eyebrows started to flake off. Her brows could permanently be scarred!
Also, let’s get into the logistics of why it could be a bad idea.
First of all, it’s rather pricey and second, I’m terrified of how my brows would turn out. But to each their own. I know some people that look great with them and I have major brow envy! However, we’re only including this on the list as it has potential risks compared to the safer route of just filling in your brows yourself, and if you need help with that, you always have YouTube to turn to.
Faux Freckles
Faux freckles have been around for a long time and while it may look cute for that one play you were a woodland fairy in, why wear this for every day? It can just come across that you’re trying too hard to ‘look cute.’
This look could also be cute for a Halloween costume, but not for every day.
Contour Central
Contour, contour, everywhere! Sometimes the contour looks great, but most times, people tend to overdo it a bit. An intense contour job can honestly look a little creepy, to me at least. There is a point where you can end up not looking less like a person and more like a wax figure (seriously, Kylie Jenner and her wax replica are seriously hard to tell apart). Then there is the dreaded blending issue, causing unsightly streaks that draws negative attention to the areas you were trying to minimize in the first place!
Yet if you contour in a more natural-looking way, I can definitely work, just make sure to blend, blend, blend!
Graphic T-Shirts
The best way to ruin a shirt is by putting some random slogan (that doesn’t always make sense) on it.
The very least these companies could do is to put a better quote on the shirt, or you know, leave it alone. I think most people can understand the struggle of walking into your local Forever 21 or whatever retail shop and discovering a cute shirt, then when you grab it off the rack and see something like “This is my boyfriend’s shirt” or “Love is temporary, Tacos are real love,” you know what I mean. It seems gimmicky and is comparable to the hilarious trend of Asians wearing clothing with American “sayings” that is just a random grouping of words, or the dread “Juicy” printed in bold across your booty. All in all, the trend is extremely aggravating and disappointing, and just needs to stop.
Armpit Tattoos
A lot of people started trying this Instagram trend of the tatted armpit, earlier this summer, even though it wasn’t the first time it had ever been done. And like we said in our article about it, it is the most painful location for a tattoo.
So out of cringe-worthiness, let’s avoid this as the ‘it’ location for your next tattoo, you don’t want to have to deal with the hair removal annoyances anyway.
One-Shoulder Tops
This was a failed attempt at bringing back this trend from the ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ Britney Spears era.
I feel like you should either choose between tube tops or, my personal favorite, off-the-shoulder tops. The one shoulder just looks really outdated.
The Brown-Nude Lip
That iconic lip color of the 1990s that Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Anniston used to wear, I feel like Kylie Jenner helped to bring back this brown shade of lip color and made it popular again. It’s not that it’s a terrible color (it actually looks really good on some people) but it’s just too repetitive.
I feel like every ‘Instagram girl’ out there has to choose this as their lip color of choice. Branch out and stop limiting yourself to the ‘it’ color — trust me, there are other colors out there to be worn!
Overlining The Lips
Another thing King Kylie taught us is the importance of lip liner. Girls and guys everywhere are always on the hunt for the best products to make their natural lips bigger. It’s one thing to invest in a decent lip plumper or use a little lip liner, but some people just go a bit too far!
It’s totally fine to go a little bit outside your natural lip line, but if it comes to a point where it looks a little like Miranda Sings‘ lips — No one wants that!
Squiggle Brows
This has to be the most iconic brow trend to date. While we did mention this recently, and it’s just for fun, some people might accidentally take this the wrong way.
This trend is comparable to the crazy feather brows a while back. Just stick to your natural eyebrow shape people!
Furry Nails
This nail trend makes me cringe…a lot! I can’t imagine that the furry texture is easy to remove. Does it keep you nail warm? Does it affect your eating habits? I have some questions for this attempt of a nail trend.
But for real, it looks like carpet got stuck to your wet nail polish; Pass!
Cropped Flared Jeans
I definitely rocked the flare jeans in middle school, but that was the last time I ever wore flare pants. The ’70s-inspired flared pant trend is coming back, which is one horror in itself, but this new cropped style is taking it to a whole other level of terrifying.
Maybe if you have longer legs, it could look okay. But for people like myself, with shorter legs, I feel like it could be awkward to pull off. Let’s just pretend this trend isn’t happening…
Lace-Up Shirts
This has to be the most basic shirt of all time. I think every single girl I follow on Instagram or know owns this style of shirt. The trend started in 2015, so it’s been awhile for the trend to continue…
I mean it is kind of cute, but it’s getting old…real quick, older than the origins of the tie-up shirt in the days of the Renaissance. But in all seriousness, it’s probably the most oversaturated shirt of the year as it can be seen on tees, tanks, long-sleeved shirts, dresses…Seriously, this isn’t trendy anymore, time to move on.
Wet-Looking Eyeshadow
These ‘eyeshadow’ looks are kind of gross looking… I can understand for certain high-fashion looks, but this is not practical! It just looks slimy, not glossy!
Let’s stick with either matte or shimmer eyeshadow…
‘Magnetic’ Eyelashes
Magnetic eyelashes are the biggest scam of a product in 2017. The product claims to be as great as fake lashes and not as committal as eyelash extensions. But in most of the review videos, I have seen on YouTube, the user is not happy with the result.
Save your money and either buy your fake eyelashes or try out eyelash extensions (but always do your research on lash extensions).
Cold-Shoulder Tops
Why? Just why is this still a thing? As stated earlier, with the one-shoulder tops, I like the off-the-shoulder look. However, the ‘cold-shoulder’ tops just look ridiculously pointless to me.
Either make it off-the-shoulder or make it a fully cover shirt — Not a combination of the two.
Pink Around The Eyes
Makeup lovers everywhere have always done different versions of a pink eye makeup look around Valentine’s Day, for obvious reasons.
But I think it makes it look like a person is starting to look sick and exhausted. It’s just not that natural glow you want when wearing eyeshadow.
Corset-Detail Shirts
I don’t even know why this a trend or how it is ‘fashion,’ but it is. Maybe the purpose is to show off curves, but I think it just looks strange.
Just stick with a normal, basic tee.
The Wet Hair Look
The Kardashian/Jenner clan definitely started this hair look again. If you’re wanting to look like you just got back from the pool on vacation, maybe it looks okay. But in order to pull off the wet hair, you have to make sure the makeup is on point!
The wet hair trend slicked back can look okay, but the wet hair in general just looks like you just got out of the Hilary Duff ‘Come Clean’ music video.
