10 Most Common Hair Mistakes

By Minq Team

Your hair is your defining feature. But, if you make any of these common mistakes, you could casue your hair serious damage.

Too Much Heat

Styling usually requires heat, heat, and more heat, between the hair dryer, flat iron, and curling wand. Every time you overdose on heat you are seriously damaging your hair. Do not set your tools on the highest possible setting to get the job done quicker. Instead opt for a cooler setting. Your hair will thank you.

Washing Your Hair Too Often

Most of us are clean freaks when it comes to our hair, but actually, you could be hurting your hair more than helping. Daily washing strips the hair and scalp of its natural oil, which helps give hair body and shine. Of course, you can shower daily just give your hair a break every other day; stick to water and a light conditioner.

Too Many Chemicals

If your roots are starting to show, the go-to fix is NOT all over color. Tell your stylist you just want a root touch-up (it’s cheaper). If you’re coloring your own hair, buy a kit that is especially made just for roots. When you apply chemicals on top of chemicals you deplete the hair’s natural oil supply, leaving it dry and brittle.

Dirty Styling Tools

After a while, your brush, flat iron, curling wand, etc. build up an arsenal of germs, dead hair, and excess product. To clean your brush, rake through the bristles with your fingers or a comb to remove the trapped old hair. About once a week, fill your sink with warm water and a few drops of shampoo and massage the brush to remove any build up. Use a damp paper towel or cotton swap on your flat iron or curling wand to ensure your hair stays healthy and clean.

Rough Towel Drying

When styling products say, “use on towel dried hair” they do not mean intensely rub the towel all over your scalp until it is dry. The hair strands are a lot weaker when wet, so they break a lot easier, leading to dull, damaged, and frizzy hair. Instead, blot hair with the towel and use your fingers to comb it out.

Skipping Heat Protectant

If you absolutely must blow dry, straighten, and curl ALWAYS use a heat-protectant serum or product to defend and strengthen the strands. Before using heat, let hair dry until damp, then gently run the product through your hair. Choose a warm setting, which is a lot kinder to your hair.

Using a Brush on Wet Hair

Never, ever use a brush on wet hair! When hair is wet it is very brittle and breaks easily, leading to split ends. Instead use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to work through knots gently.

Infrequent Hair Cuts

If you are trying to grow your hair out, skipping trims is not helping. The longer you wait to get your haircut, the worse the ends become. Try to get a regular trim every 8-10 weeks for hair that looks and feels smooth and healthy.

Using the Same Products Year-Round

Just like your style, your hair changes with the seasons. If you are using the same products year-round you aren’t giving your hair the nourishment and protection it needs. In summer, use products that remove chlorine, contain SPF to protect against damaging sunrays, or de-frizz for humid days. In the winter, hair is usual more dry so try a deep conditioner that moisturizes and reduces static.

Overdorsing on Product

I think we are all guilty of this one. First there’s the heat-protectant, then the anti-frizz, then the serum for volume and shine, followed with the hair spray. When it comes to putting product in your hair, less is more. Too much product weighs down your hair making it seem dull, greasy, and lifeless. If you are prone to frizz, fly-always, or flat hair, grab a travel size bottle of your favorite product, throw it in your purse, and use when necessary.
