From popular art periods to trends in fashion, there have been many things throughout the past century that have influenced the style of engagement rings. 1910s

This minimalist engagement ring is far from the big rocks we're seeing on girls' fingers in today's day and age. During the 1910s, a solitaire diamond ring was in style. It featured a round cut inside prongs and a yellow gold band.
1920s

White on white and lace became a popular trend in the fashion world in the 1920s and this style ring definitely reflects that. This diamond and platinum ring has a round center stone with other diamonds and lace-like detail throughout.
1930s

The Art Deco period became prominent in the 1930s and was hence reflected in the fashion and jewelry of the time. The unique design is very geometric and has multiple smaller diamonds throughout the ring.
1940s

Although white gold was introduced in the 1920s, it wasn't until the 1940s that it became popular in engagement rings. Filigree mounting was also popular during this time and is reflected in this round European-cut diamond.
1950s

Yellow and rose gold became the prominent metal colors used in the bands of the engagement rings. This round diamond was accompanied by a unique wirework band making it one of a kind.
1960s

Simple round-cut diamonds became a thing of the past during the 1960s as fancy cut diamonds became popular. These included emerald cuts, pear shaped and marquis diamonds. Platinum also became the preferred metal.
1970s

The 1970s saw engagement rings that were all about gold and uniquely shaped stones. Channel set rings, where accent diamonds are placed between two strips of metal, and accompanying wedding bands were also popular during this time.
1980s

This simple round-cut engagement ring may look a little like the one your mom has. The solitaire engagement ring with baguettes on either side was the set to have in the 1980s.
1990s

The "Radiant Cut" was the first square diamond and was the popular style during the 1990s. These rings were often accompanied by triangular side stones as well, which created a unique engagement ring.
2000s

The "Princess Cut" quickly becomes the prefered style of engagement rings in the early 2000s. This square diamond is accompanied by smaller diamonds that are set into the band itself.
2016

You've probably seen it all over your timelines and it's definitely the ring you've pinned most on Pinterest. The "Halo" mounting has become the most popular setting as well as an increased demand for different colored stones.
