You’re probably thinking these designated spots were made to play on the joke that women are bad drivers. No, they aren’t for expecting mothers either, although that wouldn’t be a bad idea. These designated parking spots are being created for another reason entirely.
To create safer parking garages. 7.3% of violent attacks took place in parking lots and garages between 2004 and 2008. These women-only parking spaces are located near the front of the garage, elevator, or stairwell and they are well lit. Germany, China, and Korea have been the first countries to jump on this plan in hopes that it will prevent or decrease the number of dangerous attacks, carjacking, and victimizations that occur in parking garages.
However, some women protest special parking spots, claiming they reinforce sexist stereotypes. What do you think? Would you park in a women’s only spot?
