Disney wants its kids to have the option to choose whatever costumes they like, regardless of gender expectations. While in the past, Disney has identified costumes as either boys’ or girls’ costumes, it now simply identifies all costumes as being “for kids” or “for baby”.
Disney is not the only store seeking to erase potentially harmful gender identifiers in its products. After an Ohio mom’s tweet about Target’s “unnecessary gendered marketing” went viral, Target made an official statement claiming it was currently in the planning phase of tossing aside its gender-based signage.
Do you think Disney and Target will lead the way in motivating other retailers to make their products gender inclusive?
