Meeting The Characters

It’s a difficult time when a loved one passes away. Not being able to see them or interact with them anymore can be a very difficult transition. In order to hold on to their memory, a lot of people will claim one of their possessions. This allows the grieving person to have a keepsake, and carry a piece of the departed with them wherever they go.
Usually, it’s decided in a will who gets what after the person passes away. That way, the deceased can ensure their things are going to the right person to either be taken care of correctly or simply because they wanted that person to have that particular item. While this usually works out quite well for all parties involved, some people can be upset by the decisions made. In most cases, this is a result of someone not being granted something they so desperately wanted. One Reddit user named ‘Jordan’ learned of a family situation like this. When his aunt, ‘Melissa,’ became upset after seeing his wife’s, ‘McKenna,’ wedding ring, Jordan wasn’t sure why she would be so distressed over a piece of metal.
However, after a quick conversation with his father, ‘Rick,’ Jordan learned the dramatic story behind the ring.

A Beautiful Day With A Hint Of Drama

Our story takes place on the happiest day of Jordan and McKenna’s life; they had just proclaimed their ever-lasting love and became husband and wife in front of their smiling friends and families. After all, no one should be anything but happy on their wedding day, right? They had a bright future ahead of themselves and were excited to begin their days as a married couple.
Although, it’s an unfortunate reality that few weddings happen without at least a splash of drama. Whenever it is because the wedding cake got messed up, the flowers are all wrong or two bridesmaids have their eye on the same guy, something unpleasant usually happens. Jordan and McKenna’s wedding was not exempt from this rule. Their drama just so happened to be the best and juiciest type of drama: family drama.
As McKenna was proudly showing off her beautiful ring, Melissa became noticeably upset. Grabbing her things, she stormed out of the venue in a huff. Melissa was known for being a witch of a person, but still, Jordan’s curiosity was piqued; Why on earth would Melissa be that upset over a ring?
After the reception concluded, Jordan set out on his mission to learn why the ring had caused that bad of a reaction from Melissa. So, he set off to find someone who could shed some light on the situation; his father and Melissa’s brother, Rick.

The Issue With Melissa

As much as some people wish, we can’t pick our family members. However, we do have to love them, even if they make it incredibly difficult to do so.
Rick was all too familiar with this scenario, and told Jordan as much when he inquired about Melissa’s reaction to McKenna’s wedding ring.
“Your aunt was a spoiled brat,” Rick began. “She treated my parents terribly. She ostracized herself from the family because she wanted nothing to do with us. She felt that my parents owed her everything and anything that they could give to her with regard to money and support.”
It’s difficult to comprehend why someone would so wholeheartedly believe their parents should grant their every wish, but these people unfortunately exist.
Things really took a turn when Rick’s parents refused to buy Melissa a new car, the kicker being Melissa was in a good enough financial state to purchase one herself. But, why buy something when you can (try to) bully your parents into buying it?
To their credit, Rick’s parents did offer to buy a car for her, but it would be a used car. This was a much nicer offer than Melissa should have gotten, and most people would have happily accepted. Melissa knew her worth and argued that she deserved more, and that “there’s nothing like the real thing!”
A huge fight erupted, and after a screaming match full of tears and curse words, Melissa left that night and wasn’t seen for quite some time. It wasn’t until 10 years later she appeared, and for all the wrong reasons.

Rick Figures Out Melissa’s Plan

During this Melissa-free 10-year span, Rick’s mother, ‘Beth,’ became seriously ill. Although it broke their hearts, it surprised no one Melissa did not once come to visit her mother. If nothing was in it for her, why should she be there in her time of need? It wasn’t until Beth was nearly on her deathbed that Melissa made an appearance. However, this wasn’t to make amends with the person who had done everything in her power to make Melissa as happy as possible; no, she was there only to do something to help herself.
While Rick was staying at his mother’s house, he heard a weird noise in Beth’s bedroom. Upon investigating, he was startled to find Melissa trying on their mother’s rings. One of them just so happened to be Beth’s wedding ring, which Melissa had been eyeing for years.
When Rick later asked Beth about the ring, Beth said she knew Melissa wanted to have it, but she “didn’t want her to have it because she knew that deep down, Melissa was still a spoiled nasty person. She felt that a ring that was given to her out of love should go to someone else out of love.”
Knowing full well his sister would try to pull a fast one on everyone and steal the ring, Rick began to devise a plan.

Setting The Trap

Rick knew Beth wanted Jordan to have the ring for his wedding, so he was going to make sure that happened. Knowing exactly how to handle this, Rick put his plan in motion by first placing a call to a good friend of his from high school.
This particular friend just so happened to be a jeweler and was skilled at making rings of all shapes and sizes. So, Rick requested to have an exact duplicate of Beth’s wedding ring made, but with cubic zirconia and fake stones.
If Melissa was going to be incredibly rude and fake to her family, then there’s no reason why the ring shouldn’t follow suit!
Within a few days, the deed was done. Rick’s friend had done such an incredible job with the ring, it was almost impossible to tell the difference between the two.
During this time, Beth, unfortunately, passed away. Although he was grieving over the loss of his mother, Rick knew he had to move forward with his plan. It was one of Beth’s final wishes that Melissa did not get her wedding ring, and Rick was going to make sure the wish came true. So, he set the trap and waited.

Melissa Realizes What Happened

Like clockwork, Melissa appeared at Beth’s house on the day she died. Jordan even remembered seeing her there, under the guise of she had left something upstairs and wanted to retrieve it. But Rick knew better, and sure enough, the “ring” was missing from Beth’s bedroom after Melissa left.
The best part was, Melissa never suspected a thing. Thanks to the fine craftsmanship of Rick’s friend, she genuinely believed she had gotten away with her scheming ways. It wasn’t until Jordan and McKenna’s wedding day when she spotted McKenna’s ring she noticed something was up.
Melissa was utterly confused. How could McKenna have the infamous ring, when she herself stole it weeks earlier from Beth’s bedroom? Luckily, Rick was able to clear up any confusion.
“I hope you enjoyed your fake ring,” Rick cheerfully told her. “There’s nothing like the real thing huh?”
Realizing she had been duped, Melissa gathered her belongings and stormed off in a huff. It’s not enjoyable to be tricked by a family member, but it’s safe to say Melissa definitely had it coming. After everything she did and said to her family, it was only a matter of time before karma reared its ugly head.
