Yuccies are considered to be the new hipsters — defined as "a young, urban creative," yuccies are currently poised to take over the world. For the unaware, yuccies are as ambitious as yuppies but as intellectual and creative as hipsters. If you want to make it in the yuccie world, you better nail down your style before you do anything else. The general idea is to wear cool things that only other equally cool people will TRULY appreciate (and be able to afford). Follow these tips to dress for #yuccie success!

Warby Parker sunglasses.

Not only does Warby Parker offer quality glasses at an unbeatable price, but their entire brand caters directly to the desired mindset of the yuccie crowd. The company’s stores are a yuccie’s paradise, with literary maps of New York City on the walls and frames that are named after famous writers. Yuccie heaven!

Expensive hoodies.

Yuccies want to be fashionable but they want it to look carefree — they do NOT want others to know that they gave a great deal of thought to their outfit. What better way to illustrate this than by wearing a seemingly basic hoodie that’s actually super expensive and hard to get? Consider the zip-up hoodie from San-Francisco startup company American Giant. After a viral Slate article pronounced it “the greatest hoodie ever made” due to its quality and roots in American manufacturing, the $90 hoodie sold out in all sizes and colors and was on backorder for months. You can thank yuccies for that incredible sales boost, American Giant.

Lots of blacks and grays. 

Wearing a lot of dark colors in the same outfit (especially black and gray) is a super easy way for yuccies to look chic while feeling casually relaxed and giving off a totally care-free vibe. Don’t be afraid to rock a groutfit — everyone will secretly be envious! 

Minimalist sneakers.

Yuccies love fashion items that only a few people TRULY understand the appeal of. Take the sneakers of the Common Projects brand, for example. They have a very minimalist design and look like an average cheap pair of shoes to the everyday observer. However, they have tiny imprinted numbers on the heel, which is an immediate status symbol to others that you can afford a $400 pair of shoes, even if there’s nothing too special about them. Yuccies are totally in favor of earrings, rings, necklaces and other fun accessories, but ONLY if there’s a favorite Etsy shop or Instagram style account behind them. Locally owned and hand-made products only, please!

Leather bucket bags.

Leather is a yuccie must-have, with bucket bags in particular being a big favorite. This is because they’re a professional alternative to an oversized handbag or briefcase while also still being very practical. They also have the luxurious and expensive appeal that yuccies crave, but more importantly they’re usually understated and not too noticeable to lowly, casual observers.

Anything Patagonia.

ANYTHING Patagonia is good, but tribal and aztec printed Patagonia fleeces are considered the holy grail in yuccie weekend wear, mainly because they’re totally vintage and hard to find in retail these days. Even better if you have a job where you can wear Patagonia clothes to work, though! Regardless, that tiny Patagonia logo on any garment proves to others that even if you aren’t out in the mountains everyday, you’re still totally open to the outdoorsy lifestyle and can prove it by wearing a refutable outdoor brand.

Denim.

The importance of denim in the yuccie wardrobe CANNOT be overemphasized. Denim pieces allow yuccies to convey who they really are to the world on multiple levels. The biggest appeal, however, is that denim is the one product that can look pretty trashy but still cost a lot of money. A quality jean jacket, for example, creates a relaxed and easygoing look, but insiders know that it wasn’t acquired cheaply. Bonus points to all yuccies who have vintage patchwork or buttons on their denim products!

Birkenstocks.

Yuccies know a quality product when they see one, and Birkenstocks are some of the most comfortable and well-built footwear you can buy. It’s also super cool that they have a long company history and are made in Germany. Of course, many Birkenstock products are genuine leather, which is a major plus. Perhaps the biggest draw for yuccies to Birks, however, is that they have a distinctly ironic element to them — a 60-year-old woman would very likely wear them while she’s casually gardening or dropping by Whole Foods, so the fact that a 25-year-old straight male would wear them too is just too cool to pass up.

Fun prints.

Prints are definitely NOT out, at least not by yuccie standards, certainly. Floral still works (as do animals). A button-up with an interesting all-over print perfectly combines the important professional look you need to have with the whimsical personality that you don’t want to leave behind — which is essentially the cohesion that yuccies seek in all areas of life.

Anything olive green.

If yuccies had to designate an official color for their lifestyle, it’s safe to say it’d be olive green. No matter the occasion or type of garment, there’s something about this shade of green that just slays in all aspects. It’s both classy and professional, but also soothing and relaxing to look at.

Parka jackets.

When braving the cold in winter months (and most yuccies live in NYC, where cold weather is definitely prominent) you can’t go wrong with an oversized parka jacket. Especially if it’s olive green (see previous slide) or has a faux fur-lined hood! It’s sure to keep you warm while also providing you with your much-desired vintage and rustic look.

Joggers.

You may have noticed that joggers have made a fashion comeback in a major way. Yuccies like to think that they are primarily responsible for this resurgence. It’s important to let others know that you care about fitness and exercise semi-regularly. There’s no better way to do that while also looking chic and care-free than by donning a pair of joggers (preferably from American Apparel).

Colorful socks.

Being professional and dressing to impress doesn’t mean that you can’t have colorful footwear. When it comes to socks, vibrant patterns and bright colors are a must for the yuccie generation. Brands like Happy Socks succeed for yuccies on many levels. They show others that you care about your appearance enough to actively seek out wacky footwear, but more importantly they allow your creative personality to shine through (while not distracting others or taking away from your overall professional demeanor). Absolutely NO band t-shirts.

Yuccies don’t need to wear explicit band shirts or concert tees to prove to others that they have great taste in music. Only an imposter would wear a shirt that ACTUALLY has the words “Bon Iver” on it. Graphic tees from your favorite artists are fine, just make sure they don’t have a lot of obvious text on them, as your fellow yuccies will instantly realize that you’re trying way too hard. Nonsensical shirts with words that don’t really mean anything are a much better alternative. A shirt that just says “Ohio”? YES!
