Can’t Stop This Speeding Death Ride
Imagine being a child, frozen in the backseat as the car flies down a dark, ominous road. The sickly orange arrow of the speedometer steadily increases as the pit in your stomach steadily drops. Your mom grasps the steering wheel with an ironclad grip and tight white knuckles, her wicked grin emerging in the rear view mirror. The only way you can get out of this death machine alive? Through the brave intensity of the driver your mom is about to run into. He’s someone who won’t back down until you and your siblings are safe from this wicked mother. His name is Dylan, and he is clearly the hero you need right now.
Thank goodness Dylan was the one to collide with them right then and there. Is there ever a good reason for a car crash to happen? When it saves three young children from impending doom, then absolutely. That’s where this rapid-fire story begins, with an innocent drive quickly giving way to imminent collision and surefire panic.

Danger Strikes At Every Turn
That fateful night began like any other night: Clarence the cat disturbing the quiet, peaceful house with a sharp yowl. Dylan checked the cat’s dish and realized they were out of cat food. Not to worry, Dylan would go out to get some more while his spouse tried to calm down their possibly demonic cat. It was only 9 pm, but the winter had been unbearably harsh and the roads precariously narrow. No one dared to drive in the bleak night if they could help it. But if Dylan didn’t get more cat food, Clarence would surely keep the happy couple up the entire night.
He got into the worn-out Toyota, the cracked leather driver’s seat greeting him like an old friend. It took a few minutes to rev up the engine and warm the frigid interior, but Dylan didn’t dare leave the driveway without feeling prepared for the trek. To drive out of the winding, hodgepodge neighborhood, he would have to make it through a dangerous back-road. A kind neighbor had tried to salt the road, but the frost simply brought back the icy plague to the surface. The couple lived on a country back road, almost overflowing with ominous tangles of evergreen trees. There were no streetlights. Dylan pitifully switched on the brights in the car headlights, but they simply expanded the inky blackness of the night in Dylan’s line of vision.
Dylan recalled, “I always use my brights but let me tell you, this road is so dark they don’t make a difference.”
The street was empty and barren. A frightening quiet enveloped the pastoral neighborhood. The kind of temporary quiet you can sense, as if imminent danger is right around the corner. Dylan felt goosebumps run up and down his arm. He may have been the only person driving on the road, but his intuition told him that he wouldn’t be alone on this perilous road for much longer.

Life Flashing Before His Eyes
The speed limit sign read “45 mph,” but Dylan refused to go over 35. Occasionally, deer would wander out onto the road, creating an instant disaster for any sort of driver. Better safe than sorry. But there didn’t seem to be any deer out this night. Perhaps they were all fast asleep. In reality, they were simply terrified of the other car that was currently hurtling towards Dylan.
Dylan slowly turned around the bend, when BAM! A mysterious car without any working headlights seemed to appear out of thin air. As Dylan would forever remember, “She had pulled out into the road, and for some reason she was at a full stop, her car half into the road.”
And it crashed right into Dylan’s poor car. The front of his Toyota crumpled like paper. He braced himself for the brutal impact. His head slammed against the steering wheel, which would form a wicked bruise the following morning. Dylan looked up, trying to peer through his cracked windshield to see who could have caused so much carnage. A jet black car filled his view, seeming to be created from the darkness of night. Unless his mind was playing tricks on him, Dylan had never seen any headlights from this person’s car. What on earth were they doing, driving like a maniac in the pitch black evening? Dylan thought he could make out three distinct shapes in the back seat of the black car. Could it be? Were those children trying to emerge from the vehicle? Were they okay?
Dylan needed answers.

Mad Fear In Her Eyes
“I saw a flash of something as I got closer,” Dylan thought, pulling over his battered vehicle to investigate this violent scene. He threw on his emergency lights, washing the scene in a blood-red glow.
At first, Dylan assumed this person was having car trouble. They stalled out in an unfortunate spot on the road, which couldn’t always be helped. As he got closer, Dylan noticed a woman in the driver’s seat, featuring a stern look with blonde locks of hair cascading down her face. What seemed to be three children were piled in the backseat, with at least one of them bawling their eyes out. The whole group seemed disheveled, like they were bracing themselves for something even worse to come. The woman turned to look at Dylan, a mad fear in her eyes. Dylan had no idea what to expect from this woman who had so badly damaged his car, but he was about to find out, no matter how poorly it would end up going.

His Jaw Immediately Dropped
Dylan slowly but steadily approached the stalled out vehicle. Through the cracked windshield, he could make out that the woman had whipped out her cellphone. As she saw him coming, she hastily put it away and rolled down the window.
Dylan, in a soothing tone, remarked, “Hey, I hope you’re alright. That was a pretty bad spot to break down.”
Jessica, who would turn out to be a maliciously desperate antagonist, replied win an innocent, “Oh man, no, I wasn’t broken down. I’m not from the area, and I was a little lost, so I was getting Google Maps up.”
Jessica tentatively opened her front door and let her three small children out. Each had a distinct mixture of snot and tears running down their face. They had clearly never experienced something so stark and brutal. She tried to gently pat each child on the shoulder, but it didn’t seem to do much of anything to calm their nerves.
Dylan interrupted the traumatizing scene by stating, “Um, well I hate to be rude, since we did just have an accident, but why did you stop with your car so far into the lane without your lights on?”
Jessica had already gotten out her phone and was quickly texting something into it. Nonchalantly, she said, “Oh, my lights don’t work.”
She delivered that line with such a dismissive air. How could be on the road without properly working lights? How could she function as a responsible person with such a glaring issue? Those children were risking their lives every time they got into her car. Dylan was beyond upset. He needed to talk some sense into this woman. And if she wouldn’t listen, then he would have to send in the authorities that would.

What Happens When An Unstoppable Force Meets an Immovable Object?
With barely concealed anger, Dylan retaliated with, “Okay, you were driving without your lights on, at nine at night?!”
Jessica disdainfully replied, “Well, my kids were hungry. We were going out to get some fast food. See, I’m from Raleigh, but my parents have a house here, and we’re visit-“
Dylan’s eyes bulged. Had she driven across the country in this death machine with her children in tow? How many late night excursions had she taken them on?! He cut her off with a terse, “Okay. I don’t care if your kids were hungry, you still drove with them in the car in the pitch black with no working headlights. Not to mention how insanely stupid that is, it’s also illegal. Look, wait here, I’m gonna go get my phone and call the police.”
Jessica grabbed Dylan’s hand with her sharp claws. “Look, my kids are scared and shaken up, it’s late and it’s cold. Here, let me write down my info and you give me yours. I’ll call you in the morning, and we can talk.”
“Not happening,” Dylan sneered. “I’m not letting you go now. Your car is busted, and your lights still don’t work. Don’t you know that if I had been going the speed limit, or if it was someone else, you could have been killed?! Do you see where my car impacted yours? If I had been going 45, you could have really been hurt! Do you know how crazy you’ve been?”
Jessica stared up at Dylan with some extremely forced puppy dog eyes. “Please, just please don’t call the cops. Let me just take my kids back to my parents. Please. I’m so sorry. I know I was stupid. Look, they live about a mile down the road, I’ll drive slow and careful!”
Dylan wouldn’t budge. He was going to make sure she was brought to justice, if only for her innocent, traumatized children. “Nope, sorry, but you’ve already said that you don’t live here and I don’t know you. You could just stand up and leave, and I’m stuck with my totaled car.”
Dylan glared at the woman. He would make sure she got the karma she deserved. He wouldn’t take no for an answer, but she was about to pull a vicious retaliation.

He Only Had One Last Chance
In a panicked frenzy, Dylan launched into swift action. He grabbed his phone to dial the police, all while taking bright photos of every possible angle of both cars. By that point, Jessica had abandoned her children and absolutely lost it. She tailed Dylan like a scared puppy, shrieking and begging him to have mercy on her and her poor children. All of this happened while her children continued to cry with increasing intensity. They had never seen their mom like that, they had no idea how else to react.
Dylan grimaced. As he later recalled, “All four of them are in hysterics, which makes me look like the bad guy.” What would the authorities say when they arrived at the scene of the crime?!
It only took ten minutes for the two police officers to arrive, their headlights temporarily blinding this motley crew. They interviewed Jessica first, while Dylan was awkwardly stuck with her now eerily quiet children. When they finally asked for Dylan’s side of the story, he was completely shocked at the extravagant lie that Jessica had made up for the cops.
She had told the officers that Dylan wickedly hit her car going at full speed, despite her heroically flashing her headlights his way. When Dylan emerged from his car, he apparently shrieked at her, threatening to bash her skull in for damaging the hood of his car. She was only trying to get her precious babies out of harm’s way, but Dylan refused to let her leave. He even physically blocked her from getting back into her car door. Oh, Jessica also threw in that Dylan directly threatened her children, using vile language the minute he noticed them in the backseat.
Well, all of this was news to Dylan. Here he was, looking like the most vile human being on the face of the planet. Jessica was so convincing too. She really amped up the waterworks; it seemed like the cops ate up everything she told them. How was he possibly going to help her children and get out of this nightmare?
Suddenly, he remembered the one tool that could save everything for him. A surefire piece of evidence that his husband has installed in Dylan’s car. If it all worked out as Dylan hoped, justice would surely be his.
~
Brutal Justice Was Swiftly Served
Dylan’s husband had dash and rear cameras installed in the car. He had been falsely accused of a hit-and-run several years earlier, and ever since then, he made sure that both he and Dylan would be properly equipped in their vehicles. The cameras had recorded everything.
As Dylan succinctly put it, “The good news: She’s gonna have to pay for damages. Bad news for her, she was driving uninsured with busted headlights and three minors. She got so many tickets and citations, including false statements to an officer and endangering the welfare of three children.”
Of course, Dylan didn’t totally get away from this horrendous evening without any lingering issues. The airbag never deployed in his car, so there was some minor engine damage. The insurance probably wouldn’t be able to salvage their car at this point, so it looked like this relieved couple would be car shopping in the near future!
And thus ends Dylan’s wildly uncomfortable evening. He never even made it to the grocery store to get that cat food! But there were still dark remnants form that fateful night. Dylan continued to feel its effects. As he put it, “My neck and back are so stiff, and my right wrist is really sore where I sort of jammed it on the wheel, but at least no one was seriously hurt.”
The moment of impact would replay in his mind for years to come, haunting his dreams and giving him vivid flashbacks every time he got behind the wheel. It served as a brutal reminder of the caution necessary for driving at night. As well as how duplicitous and wicked the person could be behind the wheel. You truly never know who you’re driving next to on the road. You could be completely unaware of the darkness that resides within that driver’s seat.
