Authorities have charged a man from New York for assembling and attempting to detonate improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Manhattan.
The Southern District of New York Attorney’s Office revealed the disturbing charges in a press release. The report alleges that Michael Gann assembled at least seven IEDs using “precursor chemicals.” The release clarifies that these chemicals can be combined to create an explosive mixture and that Gann purchased them online.
Gann reportedly stored five devices and shotgun shells “on adjoining rooftops of residential apartment buildings in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan.” He allegedly tossed another onto subway tracks off the Williamsburg Bridge. Authorities say the suspect then lied about disposing the IEDs in a dumpster.
FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia confirmed, “Michael Gann allegedly produced multiple improvised explosive devices intended for use in Manhattan.” Multiple agencies were reportedly involved in apprehending the suspect before anybody was hurt. NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said, “This defendant allegedly stockpiled homemade explosives and traveled to New York City with these deadly devices.”
Authorities Reveal The New York Man’s Search History
The news release reveals that Gann ordered the precursor chemicals alongside over 200 cardboard tubes and 50 feet of fuses in May. He reportedly assembled at least seven IEDs in June. Authorities also explained that one device had 30 grams of explosive powder inside, which is 600 times the limit for consumer fireworks.
The Attorney’s Office shared some of Gann’s incriminating internet search history. He allegedly researched a broad range of topics, including “3D gun printing” and “clorine bomb.” Gann also searched “can I buy a gun in any state without ffl,” and “will I pass a background check.”
The release concludes that authorities apprehended Gann on June 5 with an IED on him. He reportedly posted on his Instagram, “Who wants me to go out to play like no tomorrow?” Gann faces multiple charges. One count of attempted destruction of property by means of explosives, which carries a mandatory sentence of five years with a maximum of twenty. He also faces one count of transportation of explosive materials and one count of unlawful possession of destructive devices. The maximum sentence for both crimes is 10 years for each offense.
