A woman claims that her roommate disappeared for months, leaving her cat at home for her to care for. The roommate is now allegedly furious that she legally adopted the kitty in her absence.
The woman shared her story on Reddit, asking for some perspective. She explains that she is 25 and her roommate, Jenny, is 24. The pair shared an apartment for two years, and Jenny owns a Persian cat called Luna. The poster clarifies, “Everything was fine until Jenny got a new job that had her traveling constantly.”
Jenny’s pet arrangements were allegedly not ideal. She left Luna lots of water and food, saying that cats are independent. However, the poster points out that Luna is a Persian, so she requires daily grooming. The cat also has medical issues.
The poster claims that one of Jenny’s trips took much longer than usual. She was allegedly away for four months. During that time, her phone was disconnected, and there was no way to reach her. To make matters worse, Luna got sick during her owner’s absence. The woman claims she had to pay $1,800 for a vet bill and waited six weeks before calling animal control. She then began the process of legally adopting the cat and updating her microchip.
The Cat Owner Returned Four Months Later
The poster alleges Jenny returned four months later after a “spontaneous” backpack trip around Thailand. She reportedly didn’t think it was a big deal and is now threatening legal action against her roommate for “stealing” her cat. Jenny has since allegedly blasted her on social media, painting her as the villain. The woman asks if she was justified in adopting the cat or if she was wrong to do so.
Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of replies are in the poster’s favor. The top reply with 3,700 likes reads, “My god I hate to say this but return fire on your socials with all the receipts.” Another says if she didn’t adopt the cat, the humane thing to do would be to rehome it, “pets aren’t toys she can collect and then leave in a corner for whenever she wants to play with them. You did the right thing, **** your roommate,” they add.
Many others praise the poster for caring for the cat despite the financial burden. Another comment says Jenny doesn’t have a leg to stand on legally, as the poster adopted Luna legitimately.
