Everyone knows the old adage, “A dog is a man’s best friend,” and anyone who’s kept a pooch knows this is 100% true. One dog owner shared a stressful experience they had when the previous owners tried to reclaim their pet after relinquishing it to a shelter.
A poster shared their harrowing story on social media, asking if they were right to refuse the request. They explain they are 32 years old and previously engaged. However, they found out their other half was cheating on them, forcing them to move back home. They say their parents were supportive, but the event took its toll on their mental health.
The poster says they moved into an apartment and thought perhaps a dog would be a good companion. Their therapist agreed, so they went to a shelter. It was love at first sight, and the poster took home an older 7-year-old pooch. The shelter clarified that the dog’s previous owner got married, and their wife wasn’t comfortable having it around their newborn. The poster says they’ve been together for 10 months, and the dog is now their bestie.
The Shelter Contacted The Owner After Receiving A Call
The post explains that the wife in the previous household had a change of heart and admitted it was a mistake to let the dog go. They contacted the shelter, who in turn contacted the new owner. They were shocked the rescue home got in touch at all and allegedly said, “There was no way I would be willing to traumatize my dog or give him back to people who just tossed him away.”
The poster also asked the shelter not to contact them again and even blocked them on social media in case they tried to reach out.
After reflecting on what happened, the poster asked, “Am I being selfish, or am I in the right here?” Commenters are almost unanimously in the poster’s favor, with many pointing out that his dog is safe and the previous owners don’t have a legal leg to stand on if the dispute escalates. One user replied, “They gave up the dog, and you have since given it a loving home. It is not your responsibility to help the previous owner rectify his mistake. Pets are family members, and the previous owner chose to walk away from that.”
Many others share that sentiment, including one who says, “Takes a special person to adopt an older dog. Give these ****s no second thoughts, and give your guy a pet from me.
