Although shopping may be almost every girl's favorite activity, it's not all fun and games when you look at your bank balance. We're not saying that you shouldn't buy something that you want, but before you do, really consider if it's right. Whether it's a fancy new dress or a nice bracelet, these questions will help you make the right purchases.

Do I Really Need It?

Of course we already know you want it, but do you really need it? Is there any way you can save for it and buy it at a later date? In the pic, obviously if she’s looking to buy a pair of blue or green shoes… she’s lacking, she needs it.

Is there a cheaper alternative?

Sometimes you can find something in a thrift store or at a discount store that will do the same job at a much lower price. Have you checked for cheaper alternatives? If not, start there.

Can I pay with cash?

Sometimes a cash discount is available. Always ask the clerk if they give a cash discount. If you are using a credit card or a debit card you can’t always get this discount. Often having a hand full of cash can be your best friend.

Is the item on sale?

If the item is not currently on sale ask the sales person when it could possibly go on sale. Making a good friend of a sales person is very important. They can tell you all about upcoming sales and how to save money.

Do I have something similar to it?

Sometimes you already have something that may work well for what you need. Have you checked those dark recesses of the closet recently? If not, maybe it’s time to check, you never know, you may already have something very similar.

Will the purchase affect my budget?

It’s always important to ensure that you can pay your bills first. Will this affect your budget? It’s worth the time to do the math and ensure that you can pay for this and also your more important expenses. If you can’t, then you’ll have to save up and come back another day.

Could I borrow it?

If your best friend has a nice wardrobe maybe she’d allow you to borrow something that you like every once in a while. You don’t know if you don’t ask, so ask if you can borrow it. If she says no, then you can think about making a purchase.

How often will I actually use it?

You really don’t need to spend money on something that is rarely worn. Save your money for that item that simply can’t be borrowed or that you can’t wait for to go on sale. Be money wise and keep it where it belongs, in your wallet.

Can you put it on layaway?

Ask if the store has a layaway program. If you can’t afford it now, then have it held for you until you’ve saved up enough money. This will also be a good motivator for you to be more financially conscious.

Can I Do It Myself?

With all of the creative tutorials available to you online, there’s almost nothing that you can’t do yourself if you put in the time. Even if you aren’t a skilled seamstress, there are a ton of clever ways to make your own dresses, skirts, and accessories from stuff around your house.

Is there a holiday coming up?

Rather than buying it yourself, suggest it to your family or friends as a gift if your birthday or Christmas is coming up. Buying gifts can be stressful, so letting your loved ones know exactly what you want will most likely take a weight off their shoulders.
