12 Fashion Lessons We Learned From “Clueless”

By Minq Team

“Clueless” was more than a movie — it was a handbook on how to survive high school. "Clueless" taught us about relationships, friendships, and most importantly, fashion. It is the teenage Bible on how to slay the high school fashion scene with some killer outfits, as evidenced by these important lessons!

A wardrobe app is a MUST.

Years before the world knew what an app was, Cher already had her own digital wardrobe app. The undisputed queen of Bronson Alcott High School, she understood that in order to rule the schoolyard, she needed to match her skirt suits with the right pair of knee high socks. Duh!

Fashion should be fun.

Known for her outlandish outfits, Amber always understood that an outfit can make or break your day. Amber was expressive with her fashion — she didn’t pigeonhole her sense of style by following the more predictable fashion choices of Cher and Dionne. A true fashion queen, Amber alway knew how to catch our attention.

Baggy pants are alway a bad idea.

As Cher would say: “As if!” Baggy pants are never cool, no matter which generation you belong to. Unfortunately, there is a number of gentlemen who are still rocking the baggy pants look. Didn’t they learn anything from “Clueless?”

It’s OK to wear a Catholic school girl uniform to a public school.

Probably the most iconic look from “Clueless” was the Catholic school girl uniform. The look was so influential that Iggy Azalea recreated the classic look for the music video for her hit single “Fancy.”

Every girl needs a gay best friend!

Unknowingly, “Clueless” started the trend of the gay best friend. Christian may have been a disco-dancing, Oscar Wilde-reading, Streisand ticket-holding friend of Dorothy, but he the was the object of Cher’s affection. The boy was so stylish and attractive — it’s no wonder why Cher was obsessed with him!

Don’t let the clothes wear you.

You should always dress like nobody’s watching. Don’t be afraid to have your style reflect your personality. If you feel like putting on a puffy purple tutu skirt, you do it. You go, Amber!

The only approval you need is Calvin Klein’s.

If Calvin Klein says it’s a dress, then it’s definitely a dress.

The power of the knee high socks.

“Clueless” taught girls that knee high sicks can be sexy, flirty, seductive, and classy all at once. A pair of knee high socks garners just the right amount of attention from boys without doing TOO much. It’s no wonder all the boys of Bronson Alcott High School were so obsessed with Cher!

Accessorize everything!

During her time at Bronson Alcott High School, Cher was a total fashionista. She understood that a girl was only as good as her accessories. The girl always found creative ways to look fabulous, even if that meant gluing pink fuzzy feathers to her pens.

Church hats can be fashionable!

Dionne was the queen of hats, as she was always rocking some form of head gear. The Dr. Seuss hat was a very popular look in the 90s, and thanks to Dionne, girls everywhere learned that big, oversized hats aren’t just for Sunday mornings at church.

Always avoid flying balls after your rhinoplasty procedure.

Amber understood the price of beauty, and sometimes sacrifices have to be made in order to look your best. Engaging in physical activities such as tennis totally counts as a sacrifice.

Sweater vests are so fab!

Cher and Dionne always rocked the sweater vest look, whether it was paired with a pleated skirt or a nice blouse. They inspired girls everywhere — even to this day, you can still catch high school girls trying to pull off the look.
