For many new moms, taking their baby on a daily stroll has many benefits: exercise, bonding, and fresh air. Whether it’s at the park or just around the neighborhood, parents and babies love spending time outdoors. If you are a parent you probably don’t think much of it either. You grab your tennis shoes, put your baby in the stroller and head out for a walk. But, for mom’s who are bound to a wheel chair, this simple daily activity is no easy task.
Sharon Jones is one of those moms. She lost the use of her legs when she was shot at the young age of five. When she became pregnant, she couldn’t help but wonder how she was going to manage to push a stroller. Something as simple as taking your baby for a walk is taken for granted by many. Jones wanted nothing more than to experience a stroll with her child.
Well, she got just her wish when Alden Kane, a 16-year-old high school student, built her a custom wheelchair stroller. He began creating this wheelchair stroller in an engineering class. He worked closely with Jones to make something that could work with her lifestyle. The creation easily clips on to a standard wheelchair and can hold the weight of a baby in a car seat. Kane hopes to make the device available for more people so more moms and dads can experience a stroll with their baby.
