As Low As Parents Can Get

“I moved in with my dad and stepmom the last two and a half years of high school after not having a steady relationship with them for most of my life. I moved in with them because I became a ward of the state due to my mom’s neglect and substance use, so I thought I’d rather go there than a foster home with strangers.
I have tons of stories, but probably the worst thing they did was on the last Christmas I spent with them. They made plans to take their kids to visit family in Colorado and told me I had to find somewhere else to stay while they were gone. I wasn’t allowed to be there alone. They said they ‘didn’t know me well enough’ to leave me alone in their house.
I asked why I wasn’t invited and they said that they didn’t think I’d want to miss work. I stayed with a friend from work that had her own place. I called them on Christmas and left a message saying Merry Christmas – didn’t get any response.
I called the day they were supposed to be back in town and they informed me they didn’t actually go out of town, their plans fell through. They just never bothered to tell me. Obviously, they didn’t want me around but it was extremely hurtful and I feel like I’ll never get over their treatment of me. Apparently, it was my fault they didn’t try to have a relationship with me when I was younger.
We haven’t talked in 11 years other than for a few minutes at my grandma’s funeral and I avoid them if I see them in public.”
His First Date Went Well, But The Aftermath Was Awful

“My high school crush and I went on three dates. On the last one, we finally kissed (my first). I walked her home, she said, ‘This was fun! Let’s do it again.’
Then she went around telling everyone she knew how awful it was and how she hated me.
Teenagers can be horrible people.”
No Appreciation, Only Cruelty

“When I was 13 or 14, my older brother shot himself in the face and survived. I’m the one who found him, got him on the ambulance, etc. He was in the ICU for three months, but then came home and spent the next year or so in a hospital bed with a tracheotomy and his mouth wired shut as he was going through facial reconstruction.
I had to take 8-hour shifts with my parents being his nurse. I fed him, suctioned out his throat when he needed to cough (because he couldn’t really), took him to the bathroom and, at least, in the beginning, wiped his behind for him. He was a jerk the entire time to me, mocking me for having to do it. When he was well enough to move around on his own, he thought it was funny to full-on punch me in the face because I couldn’t hit him back without literally breaking his face. He never thanked me, I only got spite.
It took me a long time and a lot of work to be able to have a relationship with him as my brother again, but I can’t say I’m over that stuff completely as much as I wish it were true. I understand he was battling his own demons, but it’s still so hard for me to imagine the motivations that would lead him to behave like that even 20 years later.”
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

“A bunch of friends and I were going to a concert out of state. We (on my credit card) rented a van just big enough to seat all of us. At the last minute, another good friend of ours showed up with a ticket and wanted to go but doesn’t drive, so I tell him to forget it, me and you can take my car and we’ll just convoy it up. The next morning, I roll up to his house to pick him up and no answer. Wait for 30 minutes and finally call the other friends to see if they’d heard from him.
He was in the van with them on the way and had told them I decided to drive by myself so he could have my seat in the van.”
She Was Always Going Out “For Work”

“A friend of mine broke up another friend’s marriage.
For quick context, a girl I went to high school with (we’ll say Kate) got married to a guy a few years above us (Dan). They were going along pretty steadily. We had the kind of relationship you have with old high school friends. Friendly with the occasional hangouts now and again but you don’t chat every day or maintain a ton of contact.
One night, I was playing a gig out at a local venue when Kate showed up and said hey. I hadn’t seen her in a while, so it was a pleasant surprise, though it became apparent that Kate had actually come to see my friend’s (Tom) band and didn’t even know I’d be there. No matter. I didn’t even know Tom and Kate knew each other but she clarified they’d been working together. I didn’t think anything of it.
Fast forward a few hours and I was at home in bed. My phone rang and I saw Dan was the one calling. Instantly, I knew something was up because Dan never called me. Ever. I answered and he asked, ‘Hey, is Kate with you? Could you put her on, she won’t answer her phone.’ Half asleep, I was confused and asked why she’d be with me? Instantly, I could hear panic fill his voice.
Apparently, Kate had been telling him all night that she was hanging out with me and that we’d gone out for drinks with the bands afterward. I told him the last time I saw her she was with Tom at the venue. Apparently, she’d been hanging out with him a lot and for me to validate his concerns without even knowing their backstory, it confirmed that she’d been cheating on him.
Turns out, over the last few months Tom had been slowly working his way in on Kate and sleeping with her when she’d gone off to see bands. Since Kate wouldn’t answer her phone, I went with Dan to Tom’s house so Dan could at least get some closure that his wife was cheating on him and not actually dead on the side of the road somewhere. Needless to say, Tom did not open up.
The fun part is the next morning, Tom told me I was a jerk for spilling on him and letting Dan know where he lived.”
An Old Friends Double Crosses Over A Guitar

“A buddy in high school wanted to borrow my guitar. I had gotten a new Les Paul Studio as a gift and didn’t play my old fender strat as much, so he asked to borrow the Strat.
Several weeks went by without me asking about it or anything until one day when all our other bandmates kept giggling and whispering around me and I finally asked what’s up. Turns out that he traded my guitar for a far crappier Epiphone, semi-hollow body to some idiot. I was furious and asked him to trade it back and he said the dude he traded with had moved away. I wanted so badly to beat him down until my fists were broken but he was a 5-year friend and I just couldn’t.
He offered me the Epiphone and I told him I didn’t want it. We continued to play in the same band together until we all graduated and I haven’t really spoken much to him since. I hope he thinks about what he did sometimes and realizes what a jerk move it was.”
He Was Her Punching Bag

Juan Nel/Shutterstock
“When I was 15, I asked out my first ever girlfriend at the time on a date. Never did I realize what I got myself into… After a few months of being used as a personal punching bag for her aggression, and then only to please her wants and desires during the relationship, it all came to a head during our summer band trip to Disney World. My friends and I were in line for the Tower of Terror ride, when all of a sudden she slapped the SNOT out of me. Right in the face. I blacked out. I came to and before I could retaliate, she ran off in tears.
After a messy breakup that weekend, she came to me a year later to want to make amends. Being the idiot I was at the time, I accepted, and she took me out to a baseball field in the middle of nowhere. Next thing I knew, I felt a dull pain in the back of my head, and blackout. When I came to, I was tied up in the back of her car, and she was having her way with me…
That was my first time being intimate, and it still traumatizes me to this day. I can’t be in a relationship nor be around friends without flinching when someone around me moves too quickly, and my trust issues are a thing of legends.”
A Terrible Stepmom

“My parents divorced and remarried other people. I didn’t get along with my mom’s new husband but he was ok at least. My dad’s new wife was a witch from the get-go.
Fast forward a few years, and my dad died of cancer. His pension had a $2,000 life insurance policy which he left in my name (I was going to be the executor of his will before he remarried).
His wife said that she absolutely needed the money for the funeral or she would have to cancel it. Painted into a corner, what could I do? I gave her the money.
Two days after the funeral, she flew to Guatemala to visit her daughter who was volunteering there, and she stayed for a month. It was confirmed by others that the $2k of insurance money paid for it.”
Crushed By An Aunt

Voyagerix/Shutterstock
“When I was younger, my Mom, Aunt, and I would have a weekly ‘Girls Night Out’ where we would go out and eat and run some errands. We were eating at Pizza Hut and 8-or-9-ish year old me was telling my Mom and Aunt about something I was obviously really excited about (boy bands, Titanic, Pokemon… heck if I know). My Aunt proceeded to interrupt me, look me dead in the eyes, and said, ‘No one cares.’
I may not remember what I was so excited about, but I’ll always remember how that sentence made me feel. Made me very hesitant to talk to people about my interests for a long time.”
Ripped Off For Millions

golubovystock/Shutterstock
“I was a new and naive salesperson for a tech company. After working months to land a huge federal sales deal, my boss took over the account for himself two weeks before it closed. I got half the commission for the first order, and nothing for the millions in orders that followed. It literally cost me a million dollars.
Worse was I really had no recourse. I was demoted to systems engineer and had to work to ensure the systems went in smoothly to get some bonuses that were coming to me. I stayed for three months, got my bonus, and quit the next day.
About six months later, another tech company approached me about going after this account because of a performance issue. I agreed, and we won a large portion of the business. We didn’t undo the earlier sale, but we did win new business going forward. I lived on revenge. Since I was a systems engineer at this company and not a salesperson, I didn’t make anything like the big money. But it was still very satisfying.”
They Were The Best Of Friends, Until She Showed Up

Dean Drobot/Shutterstock
“A friend and I (both 16 years old) visited a friend in a neighboring town. We met a girl there and started hanging out quite frequently. After a few weeks, it’s obvious we both like her. We had a talk and agreed to not pursue her and risk our friendship. He started seeing her in secret but dumped her a month later. This disappointed me, but I let it go.
She got in touch with me a year later and told me my friend said I’d told him I thought she was dumb and ugly. I told her what really happened and we started seeing each other. My friend found out and flipped his lid because I ‘betrayed our friendship.’
This happened 14 years ago, and I have not seen him for 10 years now. I eventually realized he’s kind of a prick.”
A Sad Way To Spend A Birthday

“My family went on vacation without me on my birthday. They didn’t even acknowledge that it was my birthday. They went to Europe too. Then when I called them out on it they acted like I was invited the whole time to try and save face. How can I be invited if I was never told about it until it was too late?
It’s going to take a long, long time to get over.”
He Had ONE Responsibility

“This is fairly fresh and I don’t see it fading anytime soon.
I’m currently in university and am spending the summer off campus for an internship. It was far more practical to leave most of my belongings in storage than take them with me. I arranged for a storage service to come and pick up my stuff. Due to the high number of pickups that were occurring at the time, the first pickup time I was able to get was the day after I was scheduled to leave. Not a big deal, I could get my roommate to sign for the pickup. Or if he couldn’t do it, I could easily arrange for a friend to be in my apartment. Easy as pie. So I asked my roommate and he said he’d possibly be able to be there. I gave him another day, asked him again, and he said that yes, he would be able to sign for the pickup.
Flash forward a few days, and I had left and was expecting that everything would be going smoothly with all of my belongings. I texted him later in the day to check that there weren’t any problems and was floored by his response. He had left that morning (under pressure from his parents or something) before the pickup was scheduled to take place, and therefore had not been there to sign for it. His solution was to move everything that I was planning on storing into the street with a note on it saying that these were the boxes that should be picked up. He did nothing to verify whether they were actually picked up.
We lived in an area where burglaries are fairly common, at least two a month were reported within a few block radius of our place, so I wouldn’t put it past a passerby to run off with something. I called the service to see if they had been able to pick up my belongings, and they said they had. The thing they haven’t been able to tell me yet is how many boxes were picked up. So it’s a possibility that several boxes of my belongings–each of which contains items with either significant monetary or sentimental value–were stolen because my roommate left them in the street for several hours.
What makes this so infuriating is how easily it could have been avoided. If he had just said he couldn’t do it, I could have had someone else be there. I’m hoping that I’ll get an invoice detailing how many boxes were picked up soon, but there’s a chance I might not know for certain until I move into my apartment for the fall.”
His Honor Was Besmirched That Day

Yiorgos GR/Shutterstock
“When I was in 3rd grade, I did something wrong. A girl had written her name on her project and my 8-year-old self-decided I would write ‘is not cool’ after her name on her project. In grade 3, this was quite the crime. Anyway, I did it and didn’t get in trouble for it right away so upon returning from lunchtime, I was told I had left my sweater down on the playground and it was in the office. I got to the office and was ushered into the principal’s office. 8-year-old me didn’t put two and two together that this had to do with what I had done earlier.
I remember the conversation like it was yesterday and I’m 21 years old. The principal asked me if I knew what I had done wrong and I responded with, ‘Lost my jacket?’ wholeheartedly, as that was what I was told I was there for.
Then she said, ‘No, don’t lie, you’re here because of what you wrote on your classmate’s project.’ Then I fessed up right away.
But for some FREAKING reason, the principal told my parents and teacher that I lied to them about doing it. This isn’t even the worst of it all. Coming up in a few weeks was what probably would have been the highlight of my elementary school days: a sleeping with the whale’s field trip where our class got to sleep in the beluga whale viewing room at the aquarium. And my teacher SUGGESTED to my parents not letting me go as punishment. I was so upset. I still have the diary entry from that day. I said the f-word in it. I was 8. I remember being so livid with my parents because I didn’t lie to them.
I’m so peeved about this still. Like I said. I’m 21 now. I said sorry to the girl, the girl said she didn’t even care.”
It Was The Most Important Day Of Her Life, But They Had Other Plans

“For my graduation, I was so excited for my extended family to come out because we’d been talking about it for months. We got closer to the date, and then they said they definitely couldn’t come because money was tight. I was sad, but I get it. Fast forward to the day before graduation and I saw pictures of all of them on vacation in Arizona (not where they’re from). I cried a lot that day and still get really upset when I think about it.”
Stealing Food From A Baby

Dean Drobot/Shutterstock
“When I was pregnant, I had gestational diabetes. All I could eat was protein, dairy, and veggies. My life freaking sucked. Eating meat all the time is expensive, especially since I needed to save up because my maternity leave was nonsense.
I went to Target and found all these meats for $5 off, making them a dollar each. I asked the bakery chick if this was for real. She said it was. I told her I’d be right back with a basket and waddled 20 feet to the door and back. This woman took all but one packages of meat. This fat witch literally took food from my unborn child and I used to work in a grocery department, I know that wicked woman wasn’t allowed to do that!
I couldn’t eat ice cream, pasta, bread, white rice, pizza, burritos, basically anything delicious. Every day, I ate two eggs, avocado, almonds, string cheese, a premier protein shake, a salad, an apple, and for dinner it was either fish, chicken, or if I could afford it I had a homemade burrito bowl. It was the only dinner I enjoyed and that witch took that away from me. I couldn’t drink, I couldn’t go on rollercoasters, I couldn’t enjoy coffee or soda, I couldn’t eat ice cream. All I had was this cheap, chewy, tough stew meat that was going to expire that day and that freaking nut took that away from me.”
They Had An Agreement And He Broke It

Luis Louro/Shutterstock
“This was back in 1994-1995 or something like that, so no internet or online delivery/ purchases. Also, I don’t live in a country where it was easy to find geeky stuff.
My ‘best’ friend and I (both 13 years old) went out to the big city to see a movie and visit some geeky stores to buy Dungeons and Dragons products. Right before we had to leave to get back home, we saw this small store and some big boxes in front of it, so we went in and saw that they just got a huge shipment (we were out of money at this point).
We talked to the nice store owner and he said we could pick whatever we want and he would put it aside for us to pick it up the next day. We each chose like five things (not the same stuff so we could share it afterward with each other) and went back home. We asked my dad to go to the store and pick it up the next day.
Around noon, I got a call from my dad, who’d just gotten to the store. He said, ‘I got to the store but the owner said that the other kid and his dad were there right when he opened and already took the package.’
Being naive, I called my friend and asked him: ‘Why didn’t you tell me you are going there? I would have told my dad not to go… never mind, when can I come over to give you the money and take my half?’
To this, he replied: ‘Erm, it’s all mine, I bought it.’ I hung up the phone and never talked to him again.”
