Roommates Are Tricky, Especially The Crazy Ones

Living with other people is already a daunting task. Some friendships have even been ruined thanks to officially living with that friend 24/7.
Well, one girl, who we’ll call Mindy, shared on Reddit about how she’d longed to finally have a “big girl” living situation in her city’s downtown. On-campus living was getting to be too much for her and she felt she needed a change. What she didn’t realize, though, is you can’t just live with anyone, and change isn’t always a good thing.

It was Mindy’s fourth and, hopefully, last year at her university and she was sick and tired of living on campus. She wanted more than just the usual college on-campus experience. She wanted to experience life in the big city. She believed she was ready for her first “big girl” apartment. However, Mindy ran into a slight hiccup when it turned out all her responsible, reliable friends had already figured out their living situations for the next year, so she was basically left with slim pickings. She would have moved into her boyfriend Tom’s apartment, but his landlord nixed the idea. Desperate times called for desperate measures and Mindy decided her only option left was to sign up for an online roommate matcher. She didn’t expect for anything major to happen. However, two days later when she checked her phone, she saw a notification alerting her the site had actually found her a match.
It turned out to be a girl, Sydney, who was moving to America from Australia on a visa. Mindy wanted to double-check that the girl wasn’t a psychopath and made sure to email her for a bit before making a final decision. After all, you never know the true intentions of someone who’s trying to get a visa. Mindy asked her the basic questions: do you smoke, have any pets, do you clean, etc. Sydney checked off all the boxes for Mindy, though she did mention that she liked to “party.” Mindy didn’t really mind that. Though she didn’t partake herself, her boyfriend occasionally dealt, so in her mind, she just considered Sydney a potential customer for Tom.
Not too long after that, Sydney flew into town and they started looking for apartments. It was an overstatement to say finding apartments in the area was stressful. Tom, thankfully, let them stay at his place in the meantime, but three people living in a tiny apartment was wearing thin, plus the landlord was starting to become suspicious. Their rejected application count was close to the thousands and it seemed like they’d never find a place to call their own.
It wasn’t until one place in the sketchiest part of town accepted them that Mindy and Sydney had finally found their home. Mindy was also thankful for the six-month lease option, in case things went south fast. How thankful future Mindy would be of this decision because it would turn out she maybe should’ve asked a few more questions about Sydney.
Turns Out A Lot Can Go Wrong

Well, it turns out Mindy and Sydney should’ve waited a tad bit longer to find a place. The street their new apartment was on was known as “Smack Street.” All the dealers and addicts gathered around this street to get the “good stuff.” Mindy was horrified every time she walked back to her apartment and could see people passing powder and needles around. Only six months, she would tell herself, six months and maybe something better will come along.
It had been two weeks since the girls moved into the sketchy area and things didn’t seem to be getting any better. A neighbor warned them that addicts often slept in the stairwells, so you had to be careful when you came home and where you stepped. This kept Mindy on edge and she would make sure to always get home before it was dark. Her newfound roommate, on the other hand, was already displaying some pretty sketchy behavior.
Mindy gave Sydney the benefit of the doubt, at first, and didn’t find it too odd that she’d come home at 4 or 5 am. She did work at a bar, which always opened later, but when Sydney started going to after parties once her shift ended, Mindy could sense a change was happening to her, a change that deeply disturbed her.
Always Listen To Red Flags

Apparently, these “after parties” drew quite the crowd. People were into some wild, crazy stuff and Mindy started to become a little more than just concerned for her new roomie.
Mindy flashbacked to when their neighbor mentioned the amount of coke and smack on the streets she remembered the one conversation she and Sydney during the “questionnaire.”
Sydney admitted she’d had a long history with illegal substances, but what’s in the past is in the past, right? They’d even come to an agreement that partying was more than okay, but any coke, smack, or other hard stuff would not be tolerated in the apartment. Mindy should’ve taken Sydney’s past as an indication that things weren’t going to be all sunshine and rainbows. With so much temptation down on “Smack Street” and these “after parties” what happened next was something both girls should’ve seen coming from a mile away.
She’s Hanging With An Interesting Crowd

Sydney continued her late night/early morning shenanigans while Mindy focused on her classes, as best she could anyway. No matter how many times Mindy begged Sydney to stop, Sydney would bring hordes of people back to their apartment for an “after the after party” parties. Mindy let that slide as they did agree parties were allowed.
But when some of her things started disappearing, Mindy couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow, especially when it was her bathroom items and toiletries. She and Sydney shared a bathroom and with all the strangers Sydney kept inviting into the house, Mindy decided to start stashing her belonging into her room. Hopefully, that would let Sydney (and her friends) know their actions weren’t going unnoticed.
Days went by and Sydney’s antics were getting to be borderline…criminal. The men Sydney started hanging around didn’t have the best of backgrounds. Sydney started to disappear for days at a time.. Mindy would ask where she’s been after three or four days and Sydney would simply say, “I don’t really remember. I know there were some pretty hot guys or something.” Odd, Mindy thought, but what she said next was even more concerning.
“I know they all were in a gang or something. It was pretty sick and cool.”
Oh boy, Mindy thought. How and why in the world did Sydney run into the lowest of the low? Sydney’s three or four-day benders continued for weeks and Mindy’s red flags were going up everywhere. All Mindy could do was hope these next six months passed by with little to no drama, but living on “Smack Street” with someone who had a past with illegal substance might not have been the best idea on either of their parts. Mindy could hope for the best as much as she wanted, but fate had other plans for her.
Things Were Going Further Downhill

One day, Sydney wouldn’t shut up about her newest fling, Diablo. Diablo and his crew were the “head gang” in Sydney and Mindy’s neighborhood. If you wanted smack, you went to them. Mindy begged Sydney time and time again to not bring any of that illegal mess into their apartment, but Sydney was way beyond listening to anyone at this point.
The following day, Mindy woke up to take a shower and found Sydney sprawled out in the tub with pills in her hand, in the sink, and some even on the floor. Mindy shook her to make sure she was even still alive. Thankfully, a quick grunt reassured her. She later found out Sydney had gotten herself addicted to Molly and other party substances Turns out Diablo didn’t mind giving a discount on his “goods” to his new girlfriend and over the following weeks, Mindy got more and more fed up with Sydney’s behavior.
Every day, Mindy would come home and find lines of white powder on the counters, pills everywhere, and baggies filled with who knows what scattered around. Sydney even had another incident in the shower where she fell asleep with the water running for two and a half hours. Mindy was getting sick of her habits and with so many illegal substances around, she worried that her two fur babies (cats) would also get high off of Sydney’s stupidity. Things were just getting out of hand, but Mindy could’ve never foreseen what would happen next.

June 1st would be Mindy and Tom’s 1st anniversary and Mindy wanted to make sure the night was extra special. Even though Sydney hadn’t been the most reliable roommate lately, she hoped giving her a couple week’s heads-up of the night would be enough to get Sydney out of her hair. However, asking Sydney for just a “few hours” alone in the apartment didn’t mean anything.
Sydney threw another one of her “ragers” at the apartment instead. There were cans, drinks, needles, and smack everywhere, not to mention Sydney’s riff-raff friends. The minute Mindy walked in, she could feel her social anxiety rising. She scanned the crowd for Sydney’s face, but sadly there were so many strangers in her house, it would take her hours to find her. She decided to, once again, sweep up her cats and escape to her boyfriend’s apartment (a new tradition she had for whenever Sydney’s “guests” were getting out of hand).
When she got to Tom’s house, he told her how maybe it’s time she finally confronted Sydney about the issues they were having. As much as Mindy didn’t like confrontation, she knew Tom was right. She couldn’t live like this for much longer. It had barely even been two months and she was sick and tired of Sydney’s out-of-control behavior.
The morning after, she got a text from Sydney explaining how she’d “forgotten” about their arrangement for Mindy’s anniversary and apologized. Mindy was annoyed but thankful for the apology. However, what Sydney said next made Mindy’s blood boil.
Calling For Help Ended Up With An Eviction

Sydney texted Mindy to ask if SHE could actually have the apartment to herself (again) for Sydney and HER boyfriend, probably Diablo, but it could’ve been any random guy at this point.
Later on that night, Mindy grabbed the rest of her belonging before Sydney and her boyfriend came back, and she couldn’t believe her eyes. She looked and saw what looked like a chemistry lab. There were vials, glass measuring cups, and a suspicious looking substance in a small tube. Mindy’s eyes widened as she slowly realized her new roommate had literally turned their apartment into an underground illegal substance lab. Mindy knew she had to act fast then and simply grabbed as much as she could and booked it again to her boyfriend’s. When she told Tom about her roommate’s new “hobby” Tom sighed and simply said, “Well you know what you have to do.”
Mindy called her landlord, a tiny, older Korean lady named Seo-Yun. Mindy explained how Sydney had gone wild and even might be creating and distributing illegal substances in their apartment! Mindy pleaded with Seo-Yun to evict the girl so she could move back into her own place. Seo-Yun was her only hope!
Seo-Yun didn’t say anything for a few moments and Mindy thought this meant Seo-Yun would take proper measures to get such a dangerous tenant out of her complex. But the next words she said made Mindy’s heart sink: “I’m too scared and weak to deal with this… Go get your boyfriend or something and ask her to leave.” Seo-Yun then hung up on the poor girl. Mindy just sat on boyfriend’s couch, completely exhausted and confused as to what to do next. That’s when her phone suddenly rang once again. It was her roommate Sydney.
She’d Never Room With A Stranger Again

When Mindy picked up the phone, she could barely get out a, “Hello” before Sydney went on an utter rampage. It turned out the landlord had actually CALLED Sydney to confess everything Mindy had told her. Mindy couldn’t believe this timid old Korean woman had ratted her out and thrown her under the bus.
Weeks later, Mindy received a notice that she’d officially been pushed out of her lease. When she found out why she couldn’t help but just shake her head at the nonsense. Sydney had spun everything Mindy told Seo-Yun and said that MINDY was the one with addiction issues. Sydney claimed Mindy was addicted to her prescription pills, which cause Seo-Yun to side with Sydney instead. Seo-Yun even went as far as calling Mindy’s emergency family contacts to warn them about Mindy’s “addiction” and that she was no longer welcome at the apartment complex. Those pills, by the way, were a legitimate prescription that Mindy took to combat her depression.
In the end, all Mindy could do was gather the rest of her things and set up housing back on-campus. Thankfully her boyfriend and friends were around to help her out of a sticky situation. It took two and a half weeks to get out of the lease and any damage control took months for Mindy to manage. She learned a valuable lesson from Sydney and her backstabbing landlord Seo-Yun: Never trust strangers and don’t live on a street literally titled “Smack Street.”
