When you are in your office, the most important thing is efficiency. Get organized with these do-it-yourself tricks to make your office so much more productive.

Empty Cans

Cans can be decorated and lined up along the edge of a desk. They can easily hold pens, paperclips, and other items. Cans can also be stacked on their sides to save even more space.

Ziplock Bags for Storage

These can easily be labeled with markers. They’re also clear so you know exactly how much of each item you have inside. Stack them in drawers or boxes.

Bookshelf as an Office Divider

Almost any sized bookshelf can be used. This creates a divider between two desks. Two bookshelves can also be used back to back so each side has shelves.

Bulletin Boards and Tacks

Bulletin boards and tacks are inexpensive and easy to put up. The good thing about bulletin boards is that you don’t have to flip through pages of a planner or look up items on a phone. Everything is open and organized on the wall.

Shoe Boxes

The uses for shoe boxes are almost infinite. They can be placed inside desk drawers or underneath a desk. Child shoe boxes can be placed on top of the desk.

Clipboards

Clipboards can easily be hung on the wall. Several loose papers can be stored on each board. The backs of the boards can be painted and designed.

Drawer Dividers

Dividers can be purchased or homemade. Cardboard, plastic, or metal can be used. This instantly creates more space in the desk.

Lego Containers

An old dish drying rack can be placed on top of the desk. It can be used for filing papers and folders. They come in different sizes and colors.

Clothes Pins

Clothes pins can conveniently hold important papers. Almost any kind of rope, chain, or cord can be used for the line. Plastic or wood clothes pins can be used.

Metal Lamp

A metal lamp is not only for light but can be used as a magnet board as well. Make sure the lamp is made of real metal and not just shiny plastic.

Binder Clips

Put larger binder clips on the side of the desk. Thread USB and a variety of other cables through the metal. This will keep cords from getting tangled.

Baby Food Jars

Baby food jars can be used to store a variety of items. Lids can be taken off to store longer items. Jelly jars can also be used.

Mini-Skirt Cover

Sew the bottom of an old jean mini-skirt together. This makes a really unique case for your laptop. The pockets can be used to hold items.

Peg Board

Put a peg board above the desk. Frame it to make it stylish. Add hooks to hold a variety of items.

Cork Coasters

These can be stacked on top of each other and then made into a pen holder. They can also be hung on the walls. Above the desk they become an instant bulletin board.

Ice Cube Trays

These are great for small items. They can easily fit in a top desk drawer. They can also be stacked.

Old Crates

Old crates can be hung on the wall as multi-level shelves. They can also be stacked next to the desk. A coat of paint can make them ready for the office.

Egg Cartons

Those egg cartons from Easter can be used for storage. Items like paper clips or thumb tacks can be kept inside. Stick them in a desk drawer for easy access.

Redo an Old Chest

A chest can be fitted with dividers or made to hold file folders. Set the chest near the desk for easy access. It can be closed when not in use and still look great.
