The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) revealed which cars thieves are more likely to target in an eye-opening report last week. The institute also lists vehicles less prone to carjacking and suggests a few reasons why.

According to the HLDI, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 topped the list of most stolen vehicles in the US by a notable margin between 2022 and 2024. In fact, the outlet alleges that, relative to its numbers on the roads, the ZL1 had a theft rate 39 times the average for all vehicles. In more bad news for Chevy owners, the regular Camaro is also a prime candidate for thieves. The vehicle has a theft rate 13 times higher than usual.

The outlet reveals the top 20 most stolen vehicles, but the top five are the Camaro ZL1, Acura TLX 4WD, Camaro, GMC Sierra 2500 crew cab 4WD, and Acura TLX 2WD. Matt Moore, chief insurance operations officer at HLDI and IIHS, stated, “Muscle cars have often topped this list. As thieves are attracted to vehicles with high horsepower.” He believes this explains the disparity between the ZL1 and regular Camaro.

The report also suggests that modern Camaros are easier to steal by experienced thieves. To that end, the HLDI recommends Camaro drivers contact their dealers to get a software update.

The HLDI Reveals The Cars Least Likely To Be Stolen In The US

The HLDI also shared data about the least stolen vehicles, highlighting a noticeable trend. Eight of the 20 least stolen cars are electric, and two are “plug-in hybrids.” The Tesla 3 4WD tops the least stolen list, followed by the Tesla Y 4WD and Tesla 3 2WD. Toyota makes an appearance in 4th place with the RAV4 Prime 4WD, while the Tesla Model S 4WD takes 5th.

Other electric cars on the list include the Volkswagen ID.4 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. There could be multiple reasons for this, such as Tesla often having eight or more cameras mounted. However, the HDLI believes electric vehicles are an undesirable target because they are more likely to be housed in a garage. If electric cars are parked outside, it’s usually by buildings that facilitate charging.
