A man found himself in deep water with a friend after he told her that her unique tattoo was a relationship deal breaker. She asked his opinion, but now he feels terrible for giving it.
The man shared his story on Reddit, explaining that he has a friend, Ula, whom he’s known for four years. He claims she has a tattoo under her collarbone which reads, “Forever Brian’s.” The poster reveals there is a sad story behind the message. She allegedly got it in her early 20s when she was engaged to her first love. He tragically passed away due to cancer.
The man notes that Ula has dated several guys in recent years, and the tattoo has become a sticking point for all of them. Ula and the man’s wife allegedly bugged him for his opinion on the tattoo one night. He warned them he would give a “guy’s opinion,” but they insisted.
The poster tactfully used the 1997 movie Titanic to explain his stance. He said in part that Rose got married and had an entire life with a different man after Jack died in the film. However, when she passed away, her final thoughts were of Jack, her first love, and not her husband. The man allegedly told Ula, “That tattoo is written confirmation that they’re not your forever person, which is fine when you’re casually dating. But what you’re indirectly asking for when things start to get serious is if they’re willing to sign up to be your Rose’s husband.”
Ula Committed To Having Her Tattoo Removed
The poster’s movie analogy did not land well, regardless of how much he tried to soften the blow. Ula was so upset she started to cry and is now “committed” to removing the tattoo. The man pleaded with her to look at her options, but admits, ” It really felt like there was no winning here. Just a lot of hurt feelings and distant tragedy.”
The story garnered over 2000 replies on Reddit, with many empathizing with the poster. “They asked for your opinion. You gave it. Whether you are right or wrong (I think you’re right), it’s your opinion. And it’s what they asked for,” one user wrote. Another was impressed at how accurate the poster’s Titanic analogy was. ” Nobody wants to try and compete with the dead love of her life,” they added.
Many users share similar sentiments about the tattoo, pointing out how significant it is. “This isn’t some memento, this is a very explicit pledge to someone else,” another user chimed in. Other commenters tried to make light of the situation with one suggesting Ula keep the tattoo, but only date guys named Brian.
