One UK motorcyclist was likely thrilled when his antics on a bike went viral on social media. However, his reckless riding caught the attention of local police, who swiftly took action.
West Mercia Police posted a lengthy statement about the incident on Facebook, complete with footage of the rider. The post explains, “A man has been disqualified from driving after an Instagram post of him reaching speeds of almost 100mph in Shropshire was discovered by police.”
Benjamin Males from Shrewsbury reportedly garnered over 1 million views with one particular riding video. He allegedly tagged police in Mexico in a weak attempt to hide his location. The rider posted the video in April, and authorities arrested him on five counts of dangerous driving that same month.
He pleaded guilty to the charges on July 30, which led to a driving disqualification of 18 months. Miles must also carry out 240 hours of unpaid work and take an extended test to regain his license. Police gave him a rehabilitation order and fined him £199 ($267).
The Motorcyclist Videos Provided Damning Evidence Of Reckless Driving
West Mercia Police shared clips from Males’ Instagram video. He pulls several wheelies as he weaves in and out of traffic. “In multiple clips, filmed by Males himself, he can be seen driving at speeds of up to 98 MPH, performing wheelies and having a number of near misses,” police say. Authorities also note he reached 89 MPH in a 50 MPH zone in wet conditions.
The video also makes it clear that Miles was not in complete control of his bike. In one clip, his vehicle slides after exiting a roundabout, forcing him to swerve left and right. The West Mercia Police post concludes, “Dangerous riding doesn’t just put the rider at risk, it endangers innocent road users and influences others to copy reckless behavior.”
Many commenters blast the rider on Facebook, saying he gives responsible motorcyclists a bad name. One user replied, “Well the ban has saved his life .. Carry on like that then he is a plot in a Cemetery….” Another exclaimed, “He’s lucky he lived long enough to receive his ban.”
