A two-year-old child died, and over a dozen more people were injured when a car plowed into a Portillo’s Restaurant earlier this week.
According to a news release by the Village of Oswego Police in Illinois, the incident occurred on July 30 at around 1:55 PM. Officers responded to a “vehicle-into-building incident” at the Portillo’s located at 2810 Route 34. Many details about the crash remain unclear, but authorities say the vehicle smashed into the front entrance of the establishment.
The police force revealed that the crash injured 14 people. Eight people required hospital treatment, including the driver. Emergency services treated a further six people at the scene. Authorities updated the news release, explaining that a 2-year-old died in the crash. Chief Jason Bastin released a statement, saying, “This incident has resulted in multiple injuries and, tragically, one fatality. We can now confirm that a 2-year-old male has died as a result of this crash.” He added, “On behalf of the police and fire department, we extend our deepest condolences to the family during this devastating time. We ask that their privacy be respected as they grieve this unimaginable loss.”
Authorities Believe The Crash Was An Accident
The news release stresses that the investigation is in its early stages. However, detectives do not suspect foul play and are treating the crash as a tragic accident. “However, we are thoroughly reviewing all available evidence, including witness statements and surveillance video, to determine exactly what occurred,” police clarify.
A report by ABC7 reveals that mourners have been stopping by the restaurant to pay their respects. The outlet says that a memorial, including flowers and stuffed animals, is growing outside the establishment. A local resident, Chris Baker, spoke with ABC7 at the memorial. “As a father of three, I can’t imagine what the family is going through those injured and of course, the family that lost their little one,” he reportedly said. “It’s just an absolutely tragic thing. I can’t even imagine being in their position.”
Village President Ryan Kauffman addressed the incident on social media. He explained that the village is taking the incident seriously and is looking into what can be done to ensure a repeat event never happens.
