Katy Perry appeared to have a close call at her San Francisco concert on Friday night. The ‘Dark Horse’ singer was riding a mechanical butterfly above the crowds before a malfunction took the singer off balance.
Multiple videos of the incident are circulating on social media, including one from the crowd’s perspective on TikTok by user @genesisiap. Perry sang her beloved song ‘Roar’ while riding a large butterfly prop as it soared above the stage on wires.
The pop star waves to the crowd and points the mic at her fans before the chorus. All of a sudden, the butterfly jolts and starts swinging in place, knocking the ‘Firework’ singer off balance. Regardless, Perry handles the situation like a pro. She takes a moment to regain her composure and joins in the chorus after a few seconds.
The butterfly slowly moves after the jolt and descends closer to the ground as the singer finishes her song. Another witness caught footage of Perry after the incident. She’s clearly startled but still jokes, “Not today, Satan,” with the crowd.
Katy Perry’s Prop Malfunction Is Eerily Similar To Another Incident This Month
It is unclear what caused the prop malfunction, but many fans praise Perry’s professionalism on social media. One concerned user wrote, “I can’t stop screaming at the top of my lungs and crying she could’ve really been hurt.”
However, most comments on TikTok draw similarities between the incident at the ‘Hot n’ Cold’ singer’s “Lifetimes Tour” and another at Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter Tour. Last month, Beyoncé rode a large mechanical flying car prop above the stage at the NRG Stadium in Houston.
The prop suddenly malfunctioned, stopping mid-flight and tipping to one side. The ‘Texas Hold’ Em’ singer managed to hold on, but organizers briefly paused the show as staff lowered her to the ground. Like Perry, Beyoncé shrugged off the incident and took it in her stride. Perhaps owing to the fault, the car was missing from a following set at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The singer still had a stage event when she was suspended above the crowds, but opted for a golden horse instead.
