A man from Massachusetts has had more lottery luck than most of us can even dream of after pulling two winning Powerball tickets at a cool $1 million each.
Powerball shared a news release about the Fitchburg residents’ good fortune, explaining that they won their millions during last Wednesday’s draw. The outlet claims that Paul Corcoran bought a ticket for seven Powerball drawings, but mistakenly thought the final drawing on his ticket had already happened. He then purchased another multi-draw ticket.
The news release reveals that both Corcoran’s Powerball tickets matched all five white balls drawn on July 9. Each draw was worth $1 million, which the lucky winner claimed two days later. Powerball also points out that Cocoran beat incredible odds to score two winning tickets, considering that only eight were drawn in total.
The Powerball Winner Beat Unfathomable Odds Winning Two Jackpots
The outlet reveals that the odds of winning a Powerball prize are 1 in 24.9. If you want to claim the jackpot, you face sobering odds of 1 in 292.2 million. If it’s any consolation, the news release explains that more than half the proceeds from ticket sales stay in the jurisdiction from which they are purchased and go toward good causes.
When Powerball officials asked Corcoran what he planned to do with his winnings, he said, “The win feels good.” But doesn’t know what he will do yet.
We know what happens to money from lottery ticket sales, but have you ever wondered what happens to unclaimed winnings? Last month, the Sacramento Lottery revealed they were waiting for someone to claim over $1 million in prize money. The issue is that it was June, and the winning ticket was purchased back in December. The news release clarified that lottery winnings actually have an expiration date of 180 days. If winnings are unclaimed, even millions, those funds reportedly go to local schools. They also stated that they knew when and where the winning ticket was purchased, but not who the owner was.
The Sacramento Lottery mentioned that the first lottery was held in 1985. Since then, they have raised over $1 billion in unclaimed prizes.
