A Dominoes restaurant burst into flames after a crash involving multiple cars sent one vehicle hurtling toward the building, causing an explosion.
According to a report by CBS News, the incident occurred in Herriman City, Utah, on Saturday night. Many details about the crash remain unclear, but authorities say three vehicles were involved. Unified Fire, Utah’s largest fire department, revealed dramatic footage from the scene on Instagram. They also shared some insights into what happened.
Unified Fire says that the 3-car accident sent one vehicle off the road and into a building. It also ruptured a gas line, which ignited “a massive fire.” The department praised the bravery of two bystanders. They reportedly risked their lives to save the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle before it was covered in flames.
The footage shows a large explosion, which authorities explain destroyed one business and caused significant damage to two others. Sixty firefighters from multiple departments reportedly worked together to tackle the blaze. No emergency service workers were hurt, although three individuals were transported to local hospitals. The post concludes, “We are grateful for the bravery of the bystanders and the swift, unified response from all emergency personnel.”
One eyewitness told the KSL TV they could hear the gas line “whooshing.” Austin Spencer, who reportedly helped evacuate workers from the nearby businesses, said he heard a hissing noise and thought, “This is not right.”
City Officials Declared An Evacuation Order After The Explosion
Herriman City officials submitted a press release on July 6. It explains that an evacuation order was issued and lifted once the gas leak was contained. “The fire-damaged property is fenced and off-limits, and the adjacent sidewalk is closed. Pedestrians should use an alternate route through the area,” the statement reads. Authorities say that the long-term status of a “multi-tenant commercial building” is still under evaluation. They confirmed a nearby water pump facility was undamaged and the water supply is safe.
CBS News reveals that the building housing the Domino’s restaurant also contained a Jimmy John’s and Supercuts. Both suffered severe damage from the explosion. Miraculously, nobody was killed in the car accident or fire, per KSL TV.
