A 4-year-old boy has died in the UK after a gravestone reportedly fell on him at a cemetery.
According to a report by ITV News, the tragedy occurred around 1 PM on Saturday, July 5, at Rawtenstall Cemetery, Rossendale. A gravestone reportedly fell and landed on the child. Paramedics quickly arrived at the scene, but were unable to save him. Police are not treating the death as suspicious, but the incident has shaken the community.
A local MP, Andy McNae, released a statement, saying, “My thoughts go out to the family and everyone affected by the tragic incident in Rawtenstall Cemetery today, which has claimed the life of a four-year-old boy.” Per ITV, Liz McInnes, a local councilor, said, “This is a terrible tragedy. My heartfelt and deepest sympathies to the family of this poor boy. The whole of Rawtenstall is grieving.”
The Daily Mail reports that mourners are leaving tributes at the broken headstone. One reportedly reads, “I hope you’re playing with the angels and that super grandad is giving you all the cuddles and kisses that we no longer can. We will love you and remember you always until we see you again.”
The Boy’s Family Has Set Up A GoFundMe To Help With Funeral Costs
A family member, Donna Miller, has set up a GoFundMe for the boy’s parents, Jessica and Tommy. The fundraiser explains the pair, “Tragically lost their son Eli due to a freak accident in Rawtenstall Cemetery. The family are truly devastated.”
The GoFundMe also reveals that the couple has two other children, Jasper and Cecilia. “All donations. No matter how small. Will help this young family massively and help them deal with this unexpected tragedy,” The post concludes.
A spokesman for the council reportedly said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a young child at Rawtenstall Cemetery today. Our thoughts are with the family at this devastating time. Rossendale Borough Council is working with all relevant agencies to understand the circumstances of this incident.” The Daily Mail points out that local authorities are responsible for the upkeep of graveyards and ensuring they are safe for the public.
