A worker at a 7-Eleven convenience store has reportedly died after an altercation with one of her managers.
According to a report by People, Jessica McLaughlin was an employee at a 7-Eleven and went into work on June 24 expecting a typical day. However, a GoFundMe started by her brother, Sean McLaughlin, alleges that her manager attacked her.
The LAPD confirmed to People that a fight occurred on June 24, but would not disclose any names. Officer Norma Eisenman reportedly told the outlet, “Officers took a felony battery report after the female victim and female suspect were involved in a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical altercation. The victim was left unconscious and in critical condition.”
Per a news release by the NYPD, officers found McLaughlin unconscious at around 2:15 PM. Fire department paramedics transported her to a local hospital in critical condition.
According to the fundraiser, McLaughlin was “violently and senselessly attacked by one of her managers.” Her brother claims that the manager held his sister down, sat on top of her, and wouldn’t let her breathe. Several co-workers tried to help, but the manager allegedly attacked them as well. McLaughlin reportedly collapsed after she broke free.
The GoFundMe post also claims that the manager attempted to delete the security camera footage after the incident. She then left the shop on her bike. Neither law enforcement nor GoFundMe discloses the manager’s identity. A spokesperson for 7-Eleven reportedly told USA Today that the company is fully cooperating with the investigation and have fired the suspect.
The 7-Eleven Worker Was Kept Alive On A Machine At The Hospital
Sean explains that detectives told him, “Jessica didn’t do anything wrong. She was the victim, and this attack should have never happened.” Her family stayed by her side for several days at the hospital, but her brain stopped functioning due to a lack of oxygen.
In an update on July 3, Sean revealed that his sister had passed away. “She passed away peacefully today, and our hearts are shattered. We’re now preparing her funeral and still need help covering the costs. Thank you for standing by us, it means more than we can say,” he wrote.
The GoFundMe is now collecting donations to cover funeral costs as well as unexpected legal and medical expenses. “We want to lay her to rest with the same love and dignity she gave to others every single day,” the post concludes.
