An Australian teenager has died after attempting a backflip. He was celebrating moving into a new apartment at the time.
According to a report by People, the incident occurred last month on June 24. 18-year-old Sonny Blundell had just moved from the Central Coast in New South Wales to the Gold Coast in Queensland. Per the Daily Telegraph, his sister, Izabella Cromack-Hay, said he moved “to start a new life with his girlfriend.” The teen reportedly FaceTimed his sister and was with his best friend when he attempted the backflip. Blundell’s sister explained that he had hit his head on the lounge floor. He then went to bed with a headache.
Things took a turn for the worse when he woke up. Blundell went to the toilet, vomiting before passing out. His friend found him unresponsive in the morning. Emergency services rushed Blundell to the hospital and placed him in a medically induced coma before attempting brain surgery.
The Australian Teen Suffered Multiple Strokes At The Hospital
Sonny’s sister set up a GoFundMe, where she said, “My younger Brother Sonny has recently had a major accident.” Cromack-Hay revealed that doctors had taken him to the ICU in Queensland Hospital, where he was “battling a brain injury.”
She details that her brother suffered multiple strokes within the first 24 hours, which almost claimed his life. He also had another bleed into the brain, which required draining. Cromack-Hay explained, “There is major uncertainty that Sonny will or will not pull through. He’s working his hardest as there could be recovery and rehabilitation.” The fundraiser says they are requesting funds for medical expenses, recovery, and the “uncertainty of a funeral.”
In an update on June 30, Cromack-Hay revealed that her brother had passed away. “Our beautiful Sonny has grown his wings and passed away 30/03/2007-30/6/2025. We are all in disbelief and major pain,” the fundraiser reads.
The GoFundMe is still active, and the update says the family is now collecting funds to “bring Sonny home as his sisters are waiting for him.” The post adds, “We are all here in Queensland trying our hardest to organize this horrible time and prepare ourselves.”
