One woman opened a time capsule she assembled 25 years ago when she was just 8 years old. She shared the opening on social media in a video that now has over 1.2 million views.
Carrie Grigery has a TikTok channel @carriegrigery, where she posts family-oriented and quilt-making content. In her now-viral video, she explains that she put a time capsule together when she was in school in Texas. “I’ve been carrying this popcorn tin from 2000 around with me all my moves,” Grigery explains.
Before opening, she says that the timing is cool because she put the capsule together when she was in second grade. Now, she’s a mom with a child in the same grade. The first thing she says when she pops the lid off is, “It smells old.”
Inside, the capsule is full of paper and magazines. Grigery holds up a piece of paper from school with the task, “Draw a picture of something you hope will happen in your life.” In 2000, she drew herself with a baby. Among other personal items, Grigery found a photo of her family posing by a Christmas tree.
The Time Capsule Reveals How Much Prices Have Changed Over The Years
Grigery stuffed a Walmart catalog in her time capsule and pointed out the vast difference in prices. “Oh my gosh, two boxes of General Mills cereal cost four dollars,” she exclaimed. “Dude, you could get a two-liter for 86 cents,” she pointed out. The mom also found an advertisement for a “select boneless cut sirloin for $1.69 per pound.”
Toward the end of the video, Grigery stumbles across a book from school that her friends signed. “I’m still friends with Kelley,” she says, pointing to the signature.
In response to the capsule opening, one user suggested that Grigery create another one for her son to open in another 25 years. She points out that she had already done something similar and placed one under a tree in the garden when her son was born. He is now 8 years old. Grigery also reveals what she would put in one now if she were to do it again in a separate video.
Commenters thank the mom for the trip down memory lane, while one begs for a part two with the “newspaper and ads.”
