Margaret Cho is a veteran stand-up comedian. She’s also an accomplished actress with dozens of roles under her belt. Cho was a guest on the Kelly Mantle Show last week and discussed a range of topics, including drugs and other comedians. She also had a few choice words to say about Ellen DeGeneres.
During the podcast, Kelly brought Ellen up, which appeared to take the comedian off guard. Cho paused after saying, “Ellen is,” which prompted the host to say, “Complicated?” Cho replied, “You know, again, somebody that I have known for such a long time.” She continued, “It’s so weird, now, like her public perception of her is like more true to, I think she was mean.”
“She was like a mean girl,” Cho explained. “Kind of. But she would also be real nice. I think she always had kind of negative feelings towards me because her girlfriends and wives always liked me.” The Notorious C.H.O star then told Kelly, “There’s something about, there’s a kind of woman that loves a female comic. But, like, Ellen was like really weird and not nice to me for most of my career.”
Cho Explains She Worked With Ellen DeGeneres Decades Ago
The comedian reveals that she used to open sets for Ellen in the 80s when she was a headliner at comedy clubs, “way before her big fame.” However, Cho claims that DeGeneres acted like she didn’t know who she was when they met in the future. “Later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she acted like we just met,” she explained. “And I’m like, “***** what? That’s weird. We go way back.” Cho branded the behavior “creepy and weird.” She also recalls a time when Ellen allegedly cut a part of an interview with David Bowie where the Labyrinth actor raved about Cho.
The All-American Girl actress said that she went to one of Bowie’s shows wearing a striking “giant Chinese Emperor outfit.” He allegedly appeared on a show with DeGeneres afterward and discussed Cho’s ensemble. “He was really thrilled about it, and he talked at length about it. And she cut it out of the show, which made me so mad,” she said.
Cho later admits it may have been because of time constraints but said, “I don’t know if it was personal, maybe it was for time. But still, I’m gonna take it personally because I decided to.”
