A 2-year-old girl has died, and several others are injured after touching an electric fence near a fairground trampoline.
According to a translated report by the Spanish news outlet EFE, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 15, at a fairground in the Murcia district of Alquerías. Emergency services received a call from the fairground explaining the 2-year-old had been electrocuted. They reportedly said she was “unconscious and bleeding from the nose.”
The outlet explains that the youngster was rushed to hospital. However, health professionals confirmed her death “after an hour of unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation.” EFE explains that three other children also suffered injuries: an 8-year-old girl and two other kids aged 11 and 12. They were treated at the fairground before emergency services transported them to the hospital. A 29-year-old also required medical assistance after suffering from an anxiety attack.
The report explains that the 2-year-old “received an electric shock when she allegedly touched the metal fence that protected the installation of elastic beds (trampolines).” She was of Morrocan descent. According to a report by People, Alquerías mayor, José Luis Marín Marín said the fairground was not contracted by city officials and was run on private property.
The fairground operators reportedly requested authorization from the council to install the trampoline.
The Fairground Faces Charges Of Reckless Homicide
EFE explains that the Civil Guard sealed the attraction on Monday, and investigators are taking statements from workers and visitors. Sources close to the investigation allegedly told EFE they are “determining whether there are criminal responsibilities in what happened.”
The Murcia High Court of Justice has also opened pre-trial proceedings for potential reckless homicide. Per People, EFE reported, “Among the ordered proceedings, the judge ordered that city council personnel collaborate with the judicial police team in the dismantling and analysis of the electrical installations managed by the electricity supplier, such as switchboards, grounding, and lighting components, among others.”
According to a report by The Mirror, the investigation will try to determine whether the trampoline installation was safe or connected to the electrical network dangerously. The outlet explains that the fairground is temporary, and organizers set it up to celebrate summer festivities. Locals are now reportedly demanding tighter rules and regulations for electricity supplies at similar events.
