Wigs have come a long way since the powdered wigs of the founding fathers, and now a self-taught Montreal wig maker David Edwards is exploding onto the hairstylist scene.

Edwards specializes in lace front wigs, which are made by hand-tying human hair to a sheer lace base. These wigs have been traditionally popular with African American women. He started gaining notoriety when Youtuber and hair enthusiast Leonia tweeted about his work earlier this month.

Edwards just became a full-time wig maker after working as a painter, so his well-practiced attention to detail and artistry is making him the Bob Ross of hair pieces. He has been fascinated with disguises and changing his appearances since he was a child, and would often wear fake beards and special effect makeup in family photos, he told the Huffington Post.

"Even today when I try on the wigs that I made, it blows me away how drastically it can change someone's appearance just by changing hairstyle, length or color," he said. "It fascinates me. You can become such a different person by putting on a wig or something like that."

But Edwards' love for costuming dwindled over the years, only to be revived when he walked past a wig shop after moving to Montreal, according to the Huffington Post.

In a matter of days, Edwards' Instagram followers skyrocketed to nearly 35,000. His wigs vary in length, style, and color, but all are undetectable -- they look like real hair growing right from his scalp. Edwards also makes facial hair, and his goal is to begin a career making wigs for film and television.

So if you're a bigger wig connoisseur than 2009 Lady Gaga, Edwards is def worth checking out.
