Beautiful princess wigs made from yarn bring magic to a child's eyes.

A magical nonprofit organization in Palmer, Alaska creates their own wigs made of yarn and they are adorable!

The wigs come in a variety of Disney Princess styles: Anna, Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Elsa, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Rainbow, and Tiana.

With over 3,000 wigs delivered, The Magic Yarn Project is something to be recognized!

How It All Started

Holly Christensen is the co-founder of The Magic Yarn Project and she’s also an oncology nurse. Holly got the idea to make these yarn wigs upon learning of a friend’s daughter getting diagnosed with cancer. She didn’t want her friend’s daughter to lose her precious blonde curls, so she made her a Rapunzel yarn wig. The little girl was thrilled!

Holly mentioned that it was actually that friend of hers who encouraged her to make more for other patients.“My friend remarked at how many other little girls in that hospital would love to have such a special gift as it had such an impact on her daughter’s demeanor and happiness during her treatments.”

After creating a few dozen wigs, Holly posted on Facebook about it, reaching out to people who might know of a child who would love having their own wig. Little did Holly know, that post would change her life and the lives of children.

“What started as a small project, has snowballed into something much bigger than I ever expected. Along with co-founder Bree Hitchcock, we have been overwhelmed with the donations and desire to help that has come from all over the world. “

Wigs Made Of Yarn?

By comparison to traditional wigs, the softness of the yarn does not irritate the skin, as the skin may be too tender.

“Magic Yarn wigs are soft and giggle-inducing and invite children back into the world of imagination and play during a very difficult time.”

How The Wigs Are Made

While the wigs are made with yarn, they can also include additional add-ons such as flowers, snowflakes, gems, etc.

The base of the wig is a crocheted beanie with attached strands of yarn. From there, the wig is styled to have the look of specific Disney princess.

The website states:“Our wigs are machine washable when placed in a mesh laundry bag. We deliver them in clear cellophane packaging with a whimsical greeting card and information on our project for their parents.”

Want A Wig?

*The Magic Yarn Project *consists of wonderful volunteers and is funded by donations. While the wigs do not cost anything, donations are always welcome!

If you are wanting to order a wig, go online to themagicyarnproject.com and click on Request Wigs. You can choose from the Individual Wig Request or Hospital Request.

All you have to do is choose the wig you prefer, fill out some information about the child and their story, and eventually, a wig will be sent on its way!

If your hearts are as melted as ours, you can help out too!

Magic Yarn has a GoFundMe account in efforts to raise more money for supplies, production, and delivery of the wigs. If you can’t donate your money, you can always donate your time, by volunteering!

It’s refreshing to see that there are truly good people in the world who want to make a difference!
