What Do The Professionals Have To Say?
There are some hair colors that sadly may not work with the hair dyes, to achieve the Charcoal color’s full potential. Maryland-based colorist Maayan Birnstein, told Allure, “The balance between blue and gray is really key.” It’s also recommended that your hair is cool-toned and does not have any brassy or orange colors left in it from possibly, your last ombre or balayage color.” The article also mentioned that she uses Schwarzkopf Igora Royal Absolutes Silverwhite to achieve the charcoal color.
Surprisingly there is more than one solution for stylists, to create the charcoal hair. According to Glamour, “Many of the colorists on Instagram credit L.A.-based colorist Guy Tang’s #mydentity hair dye for helping them achieve the smoldering hue. He really does make a direct dye called charcoal.”
So it seems like this color is legit, especially if it has its own dye name…

This hair color will make you look like you’ve aged. Like 40 years; I’m NOT ready to be 63 right now. I mean, it just looks like there are some gray highlights intertwined throughout some black-colored hair… Although some of these #charcoalhair tagged photos look more blue-toned. Hmm…
