Many would agree that a hearty fried egg is one of the centerpieces of a great cooked brekkie. Some use butter to cook their eggs, while others use oil, but one woman on TikTok has a bizarre new method that has gone viral.
Jana is active on social media, and her TikTok profile, @jana.dvll, has over 11,000 followers. She posts a wide range of content, including singing and hairstyling tips. However, a few of her videos have struck a nerve with the algorithms, and one of her recent cooking videos has a staggering 17 Million views.
The clip has a caption that reads, “Learned this from an Italian grandmother and will NEVER do it with oil againnn.” In the video, Jana is standing in front of a frying pan on a hob. Instead of preparing it with butter or oil, she wets it with the end of a cut cucumber and cracks an egg on top.
You can’t see any cooking going on, but Jana shows the finished product in the pan. It looks like a perfectly fried egg, complete with a runny yolk. Jana serves it onto a plate and shows off the almost spotless pan afterward. Is this a new, revolutionary way to fry an egg? Well, the internet is not convinced.
Most Won’t Be Swapping Oil For Cucumbers To Fry An Egg Anytime Soon
Commenters on any social media platform are a tough crowd to please, but many of the 4500+ replies are by unimpressed viewers. One comment with over 400,000 upvotes is by @chanelxo.m, who writes, “Omgg my calorie deficit is BECOMING MORE DEFICIT.” Another by @miriamserafino brings the origin of the cooking method into question, saying, “bro an Italian grandmother would NEVER replace oil with ANYTHING bffr”
Multiple commenters also highlight Jana’s kitchen equipment. @vamkp23 points out, “You’re using a non stick pan hope this helps.” On that note, another comment with thousands of upvotes by @lizlovery retorts, “Do it on a stainless steel pan. And then I’ll be convinced.”
For science, @verontkr21h says, “I’ll try it and see if it really works.” They later confirmed that it did not work for them. I’m no healthy snack expert, but I don’t think I’ll be trading out the butter in my kitchen any time soon.
