Demetra Nyx is a Los Angeles-based sex coach who wants to break down the stigma surrounding menstrual periods, however her methods are rather...unique.

According to Nyx's Instagram, she collects her period blood in a menstrual cup each month and smears it across her face and body to normalize periods. In a Medium article, she said she first started doing this on a whim when she was filming a video series about loving your body.

Her followers, understandably, had very strong reactions. She recalled people commenting things like, "Look how disgusting and insane this girl is," and "Taking a dump is natural too, but I’m not going to rub it all over my face."

Her followers' reactions made her realize quickly that giving herself period blood facials each month was pretty radical...so she kept doing it.

Despite the criticism, Nyx feels empowered by her blood. "We’ve been raised in a society that tells us our bodies are not acceptable exactly as they are, which is even more the case for people of color," she told HuffPost. "Our blood in particular is shamed, taxed and hidden. By putting my blood on my face, I am saying that I adore my body in all of its expressions and in its natural form.”

Her goal isn't to encourage every person who menstruates to smear their blood across their face - although if that's your thing, go ahead I guess. Rather, it's taking something that people think is gross and making it beautiful in hopes that young girls won't be ashamed of what their body does naturally.

Nyx also says it's "incredibly fun" and "makes [her] skin glow."

At the end of the day, Nyx believes that "bleeding is the most beautiful and magical thing your body can do." She encourages those who menstruate to listen to their body for what it needs, not comments of spectators.
