Remember the Mannequin Challenge? How could we forget the Tide Pod Challenge? Well, a new internet challenge is here to make you roll your eyes more than ever before. Meet The "Flaunt Your Wealth" Challenge. The idea started in Russia and has become a total hit in China. These pictures posted to social media feature young people pretending to fall, usually out of expensive cars, and spill all their luxury goods.
The trend, also known as The Falling Stars Challenge, is starting to gain popularity among wealthy Americans too. Some of the top posts under the hashtag on Instagram come from the account aptly named "richkidsofnewyork". Lacking in the creativity of the original challenge, one of their top posts shows a girl laying on the ground surronded by a bunch of hundred dollar bills.
In an attempt to make the trend more accessible, everyday people have come up with ways to include themselves without having to take out a loan. By laying amongst textbooks, items from their jobs, and other common objects that are important to them, people are turning the challenge into something much more positive. These people are showing that not everyone's definition of success and wealth has to do with money and material possessions.
"Challenges" like these pop up all the time but this one seems especially obnoxious! From the ridiculous pictures to the name that completely lacks any subtlety, this trend is really something else!
What do you think? Are the kids taking part in this challenge completely entitled? Or, is this the natural progression of the Instagram generation? If this trend keeps growing in the US, there is sure to be some interesting posts on our Instagram feeds soon.
