Potato chips are a super tasty snack, but so often contain high amounts of fat and sodium that can affect your health in a number of bad ways. Fortunately, there are other options available when you want a snack. You should try some of these healthy alternatives next time you're craving potato chips.

Banana Chips

Bananas contain phosphorus and other vitamins that can help your muscles. Chill some bananas and then cut them into slices on an angle. You then bake the banana slices in an oven until they dry out and turn into chips.

Mushroom Chips

Mushrooms are far more nutritious than conventional potato chips. Cut king oyster mushrooms length-wise with a mandolin or a very sharp knife. Brush the slices with olive oil and bake them on parchment paper for around an hour.

Baked Sweet Potato Chips

Sweet potatoes contain high amounts of vitamins C and A. Baking slices of sweet potatoes in the oven keeps out the fat that makes conventional potato chips so unhealthy. The chips will be crispier if you can cut the sweet potato slices very thin.

Kale Chips

Kale is a very healthy type of leafy green that has bold flavors. Kale contains vitamins A and C along with calcium and magnesium. You can make kale chips by sprinkling the leaves with olive oil and then roasting them in the oven until they dry out and become crispy.

Apple Chips

Apples help to regulate your blood sugar levels and contain a large amount of dietary fiber. You can create these chips by baking the slices in the oven, frying them in a non-stick skillet or placing them in a dehydrator. You can dust the chips with cinnamon for some added flavor.

Tofu Chips

Tofu is a good source of protein that is low in calories and free from fat. You can bake or fry thick slices of tofu until the outside and edges have turned golden brown. Tofu chips have a subtle and almost unnoticeable flavor that will go well with any type of healthy dip.

Zucchini Chips

Zucchini is a vegetable that can help to keep your skin bright and clear because of the high vitamin B content. Leave the skin on and cut the zucchini into thin discs. Coat the discs in egg whites, breadcrumbs and salt and pepper before baking them in the oven.

Sweet Carrot Chips

Carrots contain vitamin A and beta-carotene that can help to fight off heart disease and protect your eyesight. Use a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife to create long strips of carrot. Fry the carrot strips in a hot pan with just a small amount of olive oil until they brown and become crisp.

Taro Chips

Taro is healthy root vegetable containing fiber and vitamin A that is used in many Asian dishes. Baked taro chips have a very distinctive taste although you will need to cut them thicker than traditional potato chips. Taro chips go well with Asian dipping sauces like a soy sauce and ginger mix.

Sweet Parsnip Chips

Parsnips are low in calories and high in folate and potassium. Slice some parsnips and brush the individual chips with some honey. Bake the parsnips until they become crisp but do not overcook them since they can become very hard.

Eggplant Chips

Eggplants contain B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. These chips are very tasty although they might not be as crisp as conventional potato chips. Bake the chips in the oven after sprinkling them with parmesan cheese, olive oil and a little garlic.

Tomato Chips

Tomatoes contain lycopene, nutrients and antioxidants that can help to fight off problems like heart disease. Place some thin slices of red tomatoes on a baking sheet, drizzle a little oil over top and then bake them slowly until crisp and a little brown. The tomatoes will get sweeter as they bake.

Mango Chips

Mangos contain a large amount of pectin, vitamin C and fiber that will help you to stay healthy. Cut a mango into long and thin strips. Bake the strips for a little over an hour on moderate heat turning them once during the cooking process.

Beet Chips

Beets are very nutritious and can help to keep your blood pressure down. Just bake some thin slices of beets until they become dark and crunchy. Beets have a distinctive and earthy flavor that will go well with a healthy dip or some yogurt.

Spicy Turnip Chips

Turnips are a healthy vegetable with a nice crunch. Coat slices of two turnips in salt, cayenne pepper, ground coriander seeds, cumin, garlic powder and olive oil. Place them on a metal rack in the oven and bake until they become crispy.
