11 Key Tips for Beginner Runners

By Minq Team
Jacob Lund

Running is one of the best things you can do for your body, but it's not so easy to get into the habit of going for a regular run. So often, hanging out with friends, eating, or Netflix are just too tempting to allow a run. Thankfully, we have compiled some tried and proven ways to get you running and even start to enjoy it!

Run with a Friend

Running with a friend can be a great way to make exercise a little more fun. A friend can also work as a great support system if you feel like giving up some days. If you don't have a friend who wants to start running, look for a running group! Most cities have them and they're a great way to meet people and make working out fun!

Intervals

Running can be really hard when you first start out, but don't let that discourage you! Running in intervals can be a really helpful way of increasing your stamina. Start out by running for a minute and walking five minutes and see if you can begin to close the gap!

Mix it Up

Cross training is not only important for your body's health, it can be great to help with your mental perseverance as well. Switching it up means you are less likely to get sick of running and give up. Try lifting some weights at the gym or a work out video like “Insanity!”

Distance Instead of Time

When you first start running don't worry about how long it takes you. Focus on the distance and getting to the end and slowly the time will start to decrease. It's better for your fitness to run a full mile slowly than a quarter of a mile really quickly.

Book Fun Races

Set yourself a goal by booking a short race! The ever looming date in the distance will motivate you to keep running and you may just find that a casual race makes you love running even more!

Get the Right Pair of Shoes

Get yourself fitted for the right pair of running shoes! It makes all the difference. Not only will you find it easier to run longer distances in the right pair of shoes, but also your feet will feel a lot less sore.

Change Up Your Route

Make running into an adventure! Instead of running the same way every day, try to change up your route or routine. Exploring a new park, path or area will stop running from feeling stale. If you're worried about keeping track of your distance on a new route download the phone application, RunKeeper.

Download an App

There are tons of amazing running apps on top of RunKeeper. Two great ones you should also look into downloading are MapMyRun and Zombies, Run! MapMyRun does what the name implies: shows you a map with your run on it. Zombies, Run! is great for those who need to spice up their run a little. The app transforms your run into an interactive game of hiding from and battling zombies.

Eat/Drink Right

Keeping yourself healthy and hydrated can only help you on your runs. Be sure to be drinking more water than normal! Also, consider what you eat before and after your workouts, so that you're fueled for both your run and your day.

Keep a Log

Keeping a log is important to remind yourself what makes your body happy and how far you've come since you started on your running journey. Keep track of distance and time and even factors such as diet and mood!

Clothes

For the fashionably inclined, reward your achievements with new running gear! Not only is it a nice way to pat yourself on the back, it is a new source for motivation. You can't let new running clothes go unworn!
