Contouring Tips For Each Face Shape

By Hannah Clark

As if contouring isn't already complicated enough, there is a correct way to accentuate the features of each face shape. No complicated contour palette required! Don't know your face shape? Don't worry, we've got you covered.

A Round Face

Round faces resemble circles. If you have a rounded jawline, wide cheekbones and a shorter chin you have a round face.

How To Contour A Round Face

To elongate the face, create more angles by highlighting the center of the forehead and the chin. Accentuate your cheekbones by applying bronzer or a darker shade of foundation from your temples down to your jawline.

An Oval Face

Oval faces are a little longer than they are wide. The forehead is wider than the jawline and the chin is not as pointy. Oval faces slightly resemble an upside down egg.

How To Contour An Oval Face

For oval faces, highlighter is your best friend. Apply highlighter to the center of the forehead, the center of the chin and from the apples of the cheeks to the brow bone. If you want, lightly contour the bottom of the cheekbones and the temples.

A Heart Face

The giveaways for a heart-shaped face is a window's peak hairline, wide forehead and a narrow, pointy chin.

How To Contour A Heart Face

Since your bone structure is already amazing, play it up a little more by lightly contouring the cheekbones and temples. Apply a highlighter to the center of the forehead, the chin and the apples of the cheeks.

A Triangle Face

The triangle face is similar to the heart face, but with sharper angles. The hairline is more square, the cheekbones are more pronounced, and the chin is pointy.

How To Contour A Triangle Face

Soften up those angles by applying highlighter near the top of the cheekbones underneath the eyes, the center of the forehead and a tiny bit to the center of the chin. Apply bronzer, contour cream, or a darker foundation to the temples of the forehead and the cheekbones.

A Square Face

People with square faces have a wide hairline and jawline. Their cheekbones are strong and pronounced.

How To Contour A Square Face

If you got it, flaunt it, and girl, you have fabulous bone structure. Show it off by contouring your cheekbones and your entire jawline. Make your smile pop by highlighting the apples of your cheeks.

An Oblong Face

An oblong face is twice as long as it is wide with soft angles. People with oblong faces have a rounded hairline and killer cheekbones.

How To Contour An Oblong Face

Since your cheekbones are already on fleek, there is no need to contour them. Instead add a little bronzer or darker foundation to your hairline. Add some highlighter to your cheeks and you're done!

A Diamond Face

Diamond faces are a mix between an oblong face and a square face. They are longer than they are wide, but have sharp angles, like a pointed jawline, pronounced cheekbones and wider hairline.

How To Contour A Diamond Face

To accentuate your bone structure, contour the area below your cheekbones. Add highlighter to the center of the forehead and chin. With the highlighter create an upside down triangle under the eyes and blend.

A Rectangular Face

A rectangular face shape is a little longer than it is wide, but the hairline and jawline are very similar in width.

How To Contour A Rectangular Face

Add some angles to your face by contouring from the temple to the top of the forehead and from the bottom of the cheekbones to the jawline. Apply highlighter all over the cheeks.
