13 Contouring Struggles Anyone Who Isn’t A Professional Makeup Artist Will Understand

By Kelsey Stoskopf
Jacob Lund

Contouring means using different shades on different parts of your face to mold it into exactly what you want. Sure this may sound and look easy based on the tutorials you've seen, but it's not. Especially for those of us who are by no means a makeup pro, contouring can be a daunting task. These struggles become all too real when trying to master the contour.

It takes a lot of tools.

From different brushes to different shades of foundation, contouring takes so many different tools. Let's be honest, if you aren't a makeup professional, chances are you have one brush and one foundation. Where did the simpler times go?!

It also take A LOT of time.

You can throw your 30 minute morning routine out the window. Long gone are the days of rolling out of bed and doing your makeup in 10 minutes. Contouring takes forever and if you aren't a pro, you probably don't have time for that.

It can be utterly horrifying to learn.

Prepare for the nightmares that are going to come with trying to learn how to contour.

If you do try this contouring challenge, the mess goes from 0 to 100 real quick.

Soon brushes are flying, foundation is falling and you're left with a pile of makeup all over. Then you have to clean it all up and that is a hassle all in itself.

Different lighting means different looks.

We all know the power of lighting and how it can either make us look like a flawless chick, or a makeup failure.

There are so many terms to know.

It's like you're in Spanish class all over again learning how to pronounce words. But let's be honest, Spanish is a whole lot easier than learning what these makeup terms mean.

And the placement of those terms is just as confusing.

You need a road map just to know where to go on your own face.

You never know which way is the right way.

There are so many ways to contour, from dots, to lines, to shades. You're left wondering where people come up with all this and realize you're the gullible one who's going to try all the different versions.

Then people start doing full masterpieces on their faces.

And you wave your white flag in defeat. Yep, no thank you.

You’re Prone To Mid-Life Crises Every Day

Every time you sit down to watch a YouTube tutorial to finally try and master the art of contouring, you get half way through and lose all hope. Cue the chucking of brushes, screams and hair pulling. It's all bound to happen out of frustration.

A Lot of Practice Makes Perfect

If there was a motto for contouring, practice makes perfect would be it. And even with hours of practice, things can go horribly wrong.

Sometimes you just feel like giving up.

You want to give up, but if you did now, you'd be left with a face that looks like you just stepped out of a circus. Ugh!

And once your FINALLY got down the face…

Everyone else is on to different contours. From full body, to hair, to lips, people are contouring everything and you're left feeling defeated.
