Recently, the slept-in-makeup look has been trending, and for good reason. The slightly smudged look is not only sultry and rocker-chic, but also gives off the impression that you were too busy or had too crazy of a night to deal with washing it off. However, this glorified look is also one of the worst things you could be doing to your skin.


Dermatologist Dennis Gross, MD, shares the dirty truth about sleeping in makeup. Doing so clogs pores, leading to bacteria buildup, enlarged pores, and breakouts. Further, dirt and pollution from the day sticks to your makeup which contributes to premature aging of the skin.


It is clear that the solution is to avoid sleeping in makeup is to remove it before bed. However, when you do slip up and fall asleep after a long night hitting the bars, you can use a few simple tricks to battle skin damage. First, rinsing your face regularly with exfoliating cleanser helps remove the buildup of makeup, dead skin cells, and oils. Second, consider switching from an oil based foundation to a powder or mineral makeup which will allow your skin to interact with the environment.

If you want to achieve the sexy, rocker look you get from sleeping in your makeup, try this four step look to a smudged, smoldering eye. First, line the entire lash line, top and bottom, with liner. Next, blend the liner with a clean fingertip. Third, boost those brows with a brow powder one shade darker than your natural color; brush in the opposite direction of hair growth. Lastly, complete the look by swiping on black mascara holding the brush vertically.
