Good news for beauty and animal lovers!
Only six months after it was introduced, California just unanimously passed the Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act, SB 1249. Starting January 1, 2020, the law will officially be in effect, making it illegal for any cosmetic companies to knowingly sell products that have been tested on animals.
According to Refinery29, Senator Cathleen Galgiani said in a statement, “I’m proud of California lawmakers for moving science, industry, and ethics forward today. Cruelty-free cosmetics are good for business, safe for humans, and don’t harm animals.”
The battle against animal testing has been a long and difficult one. There about 40 global economies, including the European Union, that have made animal testing, but unfortunately, the United States is not part of that group. Some countries, like China, not only have legal animal testing, but it’s mandatory for the sale of cosmetics.
Even though there are still 49 states to go before the rest of the United States is on board, this small victory is enough encouragement for animal advocates to keep fighting the good fight.
