Start by pulling your hair into a semi-loose ponytail, twisting the hair, and wrapping into a bun. The trick here to avoid using pins or hair ties is to tuck the bun under the rest of your hair. So, while holding onto the bun with one hand, pull up your hair from one side of the bun and push the bun in while you pull the hair layer over. It will probably take some practice to get it right, but once you do, it's a simple trick to pull your hair up without any a hair tie!
